ex Lothian Buses vehicles for Sale

Hi everyone. I thought it made sense to start this on a separate thread rather than clutter up the main Lothian and subsidiaries one.

I’m just wondering if anyone knows of any ex Lothian Buses vehicles for sale for a cheap price, ideally less than 3k. I’ve been in touch with dealers and as most of the vehicles there are service worthy they are well over the 3k Mark.

The sort of things I’d be interested in are the old Dennis Darts (V, Y, 51, 52 and 53 regs) and anything older than that really. Anything newer than that I’m guessing will probably have issues.

Doubles I doubt will be at this price hence why I’ve stuck with the singles for now.

For preservation I assume? Theres plenty stuff still kicking about if you know where to look. Most of the ex Lothian Olympians are starting to be retired from independents now and heading for scrap.

Yea it’s for preservation. Myself and a friend are just looking for something to fill the time when the restrictions permit it.

I’ve sent emails about but most get ignored, probably because of my age.

Olympians would be nice but have no idea where to look, and I’ve ran into dead ends quiet a few times now. My friend noticed one on Facebook the other week but I can’t imagine every bus gets put up for sale.

I’m keen to preserve something of significance (like say the last one of a batch) or if it hasn’t been done already.

We went to Horsburgh last year before the restrictions started and pretty much everything had gone by that point.

I doubt that people are rejecting your enquiries based on age, most companies are fairly poor about getting back about anything. Making sure you sound like you're serious and have funds available are likely to be the more important considerations.
The first step would be deciding what you're really after then finding where they are. The Darts would be much less valuable if they're still around, they might take a bit more searching for however you could ask on here about specific examples as somebody may have a local contact.
Without seat belts Olympians are only going to be valuable if they're very good examples (unfortunately Lothian had a very good record for looking after it's vehicles well so, even after another owner, they're still likely to be better than average). The downside is if you're only aiming to pay scrap prices you're more likely to get a poor example. Again it depends if you're after something to drive or something to work on. And remember the tyre laws have changed so you could be looking at several that are going to need replacing on any vehicle that's being disposed of now. (There are countless other costs to worry about of course, it's just this now adds to the problem!)

Thanks for the advice, yea the tyre issue seems to be a big problem now, I think that's why so many dealer buses have gone up a bit.

I'm gonna take some time with my friend to decide what I really want, after all these restrictions give me time anyway.

I'm sure you may have heard it before, but buying the bus is the easy part. Its all the other things that come with it, storage particularly. To give you a rough idea a friend of mine has just purchased an ex Lothian Olympian a few weeks ago, price was £1500 all in, and its in a fair condition. Its advisable to probably not go through a dealer. All my vehicles I own I have dealt with companies/people directly.

And remember- particularly on stuff from Scotland and Lothian is no exception- that chassis corrosion could be a problem....
