Just been looking and surprised to see that some of the 43s are still stored after quite a few years and are some going for scrapping this year?

Yes, been thinking of this too. With GWR having about 25 or so, XC 12, EMR maybe about 10, Scotrail 54, Network Rail 3, other use such as preserved or Colas maybe half a dozen there is still a lot out of use stored at various places such as Ely, Barrow Hill, Neville Hill, Long Marston. Even the Neville Hill accident damaged one 43300 still hasn't been scrapped. In fact for nearly 200 power cars ever built only about 4 have ever been scrapped!! With a huge amount of their Mk3 coaches scrapped now be nothing for them to haul anyway. Why the reluctance to scrap them after parts removal?? Surely the storage costs of power cars is more than the coaches?!

Don't forget some at Burton on Trent Nemesis sidings as well. With one at Bicester MOD in storage. Unless there are plans for these?

The cost of sticking it in a siding is probably no more than for a coach. It's the extras that cost more. If they are being stored with a view to possible future use then they need to be fired up once in a while, given a once over, levels checked etc. There's also more of value (to thieves) so a higher level of security is desirable.

Ofcourse its always a shame to scrap a train but a cab would be nice off one,not that they'd likely sell.

Do the engines have potential resale value? I remember reading that the MTU engines can also be used in marine applications.

The engines will likely be on some kind of lease arrangement. Thinking about it, that could be a reason why the 43s are not being scrapped yet.

The engines are not on lease agreements - they are owned by the vehicle owner.

Good point - as relatively modern engines they might be of use for marine or industrial purposes.

Given that the power cars are shorter than coaches, if anything they are likely to be cheaper to store than an equivalent number of Mark 3s!

Also this way, if any in use power car suffers significant damage they can go to the long line of power cars and chose one that is in the best condition to replace it.
They won't know which will degrade badly in storage, so why not store them all?

Rather like the Southern Region man walking along a scrapline of Mark 1 vehicles at York, picking out ones for conversion into REPs.

Right - presumably the 43s are being stored until their respective ROSCOs get around to removing the engines.

They seem to be interested in the VP185s, which still leaves all the ex GWR/LNER power cars

That doesn't mean to say there hasn't been any interest in the ex EC or GW MTUs though, but as with everything we'll have to wait and see what happens. But yes, Colas does want a micro fleet of the ex EMR PCs.

If you're after a cab, it's always worth asking one of the ROSCOs - the worst they could do is say no, but you never know... one just might make one available once disposals start ( although highly likely it would be stripped of instruments first! )... Come to think of it, an empty class 43 bodyshell would make an interesting garden shed if you could prevent water ingress through all the vents...

It wouldn't surprise me to see on on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces in a couple of years!

Wouldn't it be better to create a list of power cars and their state / condition.
I gather various power cars are now sitting around being stripped of parts - with no likelihood of ever being restored to full working order. Didn't Scotrail buy a few extra PC's for that purpose?
This could be a list of power cars owned by TOC's as well as those off-lease.

Those being stripped:

43185 - Haymarket (Scotrail)
43313 - Laira (XC)
43300 - Neville Hill (EMR)
43195 - Laira (GWR)

43018 has already been stripped at Haymarket and the remains donated to Crewe Heritage Centre.

Not aware of any others being stripped but can't say for sure that there aren't any.
