I see on Avanti's website they have now started to issue smartcards - https://www.avantiwestcoast.co.uk/tickets-and-savings/ticket-types/smartcards

A smarter choice.

Continuing to innovate and look towards the future here at Avanti West Coast, we’ve created our very own smartcard. A faster, easier and safer way to buy, renew and travel with a train ticket.

Made to be more durable for your travels, you can wave goodbye to your multiple paper tickets and say hello to a paperless future!

Which types of tickets are available on Smartcards?

You’ll be able to travel from home to work, from the countryside to the city; and from friends to family with your smartcard.

Our smartcards work with a range of different ticket types including:

Season tickets

Weekly tickets

Monthly tickets

Annual tickets

Day singles

Day returns

Period Returns

Please note you’ll need to carry either photo id, a payment card or another form of ID with your name on it as proof of identity.

Getting started with your smartcard

How to order and register your smartcard?

STEP 1 - Order your free Smartcard online

Create an account, or login if you have one.
Once in your account navigate to manage your Smartcards in ‘My Smartcards’, where you can order your free Avanti West Coast Smartcard

Your personalised Smartcard will arrive at your door within 5 working days

If you bought a ticket when you ordered your smartcard this will already be loaded onto Smartcard ready for use

STEP 2 - Purchase your tickets

Buying tickets online

To purchase your tickets online simply search for it within your online account.

Login to your account

If you buy your ticket two hours ahead of your departure you will be able to tap straight in at the gates. However, if you purchase your ticket less than 2 hours before your travel then you will need to visit the booking office at the station to activate your ticket before travelling.

Buy tickets at a self-service ticket machine

Buy your smartcard at one of our smartcard enabled, self-service ticket vending machines at any Avanti West Coast stations.

At the station you can only buy Weekly season tickets or day singles/returns to be loaded onto your smartcard.
Follow the onscreen instructions selecting smartcard delivery and don’t forget to load your ticket after payment by tapping your smartcard on the reader.

STEP 3 - Touch in

Once you're on the move and ready to travel make sure to hold your Smartcard on the gateline or enabled self-service ticket vending machine at the station. Hold it there for a few seconds to allow the ticket time to activate.

If you bought a ticket online 2 hours ahead of travel the ticket will automatically be loaded onto your Smartcard when you touch in at the gates or enabled self service ticket vending machine.

If there is no gateline at your station then just board your train. Your smartcard will be checked by the Train Manager.

Please note: you will need to carry either photo id, a payment card or another form of id as proof of identity when you travel. If you have any issues please ask a member of staff for assistance.

STEP 4 - Touch out

Once you've reached your destination station - Touch-out.
You do this by holding your Smartcard on the gateline if there is one to open the gate at your arrival station.

Useful information

Please note: If you’ve bought your tickets on a c2c Smartcard, we will automatically give you money back, into your c2c online account, whenever you experience delays of more than 2 minutes.

One thing to note though is it says..

Seems a bit odd.

Trenitalia own C2C. Trenitalia own 30% of Avanti. I suspect that to save money they are using the same backend and just forgot to change that text (which is very possibly inaccurate) on the Avanti version.

Up to a point they are using Paragon ID as their card supplier , just like we are.

Hopefully loading tickets onto them will be possible with corporate portals eventually. Fed up of having to refill the bloody ticket printer nobody else bothers to restock :D
