One can catch a northbound victria line from Euston to Kings cross st pancras, then catch a northbound northern line service from Kings cross St pancras back to Euston.

Are there any other places where one can travel back to where one started while travelling notionally in the same "direction" for the whole route.

related question, how are directions identified on the circle line? do they identify them as "clockwise" and "anticlockwise"? do the descriptions change as you move around the circle?

Circle line services tend to be advertised as via one of the significant stations. e.g. "This is a Circle Line service via Liverpool Street".

IIRC the Glasgow subway refers to its lines as the Outer Circle and Inner Circle, being clockwise and anticlockwise respectively.

Platform labels state the direction of the host line - i.e. District or H&C east bound and westbound. Outer rail Circle line trains continue to be described as "via High St Kensington and Paddington" after departure from Victoria westbound. If stood at Gloucester Road, you can notice it change to just "Edgware Road" as it departs from Platform 2.

Yes, trains were scheduled to run from Tower Hill to Barking etc at extremes of the day to prevent constant wear

Regarding circular lines, in Berlin they have solved it by having two lines on the Ringbahn. S41 runs clockwise and S42 anticlockwise.
