One can catch a northbound victria line from Euston to Kings cross st pancras, then catch a northbound northern line service from Kings cross St pancras back to Euston.

Are there any other places where one can travel back to where one started while travelling notionally in the same "direction" for the whole route.

related question, how are directions identified on the circle line? do they identify them as "clockwise" and "anticlockwise"? do the descriptions change as you move around the circle?

Circle line services tend to be advertised as via one of the significant stations. e.g. "This is a Circle Line service via Liverpool Street".

Is the same true of signage to platforms at circle line stations?

IIRC the Glasgow subway refers to its lines as the Outer Circle and Inner Circle, being clockwise and anticlockwise respectively.

The Circle line timetable identifies Outer Rail and Inner Rail, as it is jointly published with the Hammersmith & City timetable the page headers also have eastbound and westbound. The timetable headers align eastbound H&C with outer rail Circle and westbound H&C with inner rail Circle, since the Circle's outer rail is eastbound where it shares track with H&C. Platform labels state the direction of the host line - i.e. District or H&C east bound and westbound. Circle trains change their labels at key stations along the route, e.g. Liverpool Street, Victoria. Of course once they are westbound from Aldgate, they can be described as going to Hammersmith. Once they are at Victoria westbound they can be described as destination Edgware Road.

If there's a Circle/H&C driver on here, I'm sure they'll have the full list of what their train describes itself as, as it progresses around the Circle.

Outer rail Circle line trains continue to be described as "via High St Kensington and Paddington" after departure from Victoria westbound. If stood at Gloucester Road, you can notice it change to just "Edgware Road" as it departs from Platform 2.

Well, that's how it was before the first lockdown anyway.

Except at Aldgate where they are labelled simply "Platform #", even on the same boards as Metropolitan "Platform # - Northbound".

Earls Court to Barons Court on the Piccadilly line, and Barons Court to Earls Court on the District.

When trains used to do the full circle, did they change which direction they went to save on wear and tear?

Regarding circular lines, in Berlin they have solved it by having two lines on the Ringbahn. S41 runs clockwise and S42 anticlockwise.
