Which are the best examples of totally contrasting rail stations either by type of station, or by contrasting location, served by the same stopping train? Request stop stations can be included.

Here are a couple of examples to start you off:

London Euston and Corrour (station and location)
Levenshulme and Chapel-en-le-Frith (location)
Birmingham New Street and Dovey Junction (station and location)

Any combination of locations around the network where the same train calls at some wayside shack and then terminates at a "big" city terminus, three more for example...

Ardwick and Manchester Piccadilly;

Southease and Brighton;

Gargrave and Leeds;

Pre-Covid Southease also had a peak-only service to Victoria, for a bigger contrast.

I'm not sure if it's quite what was after but the Contrast of Blackfriars with City thameslink always feels very marked to me, especially southbound as you go from an underground, quite cramped station to a bright, elevated station with a great view over the river.

Instead of Southease and Brighton, London Road(Brighton) and Brighton

Why is London Road a greater contrast to Brighton than Southease? Brighton has maintained its historic feel, with elements like the wooden platforms, curved roof, and Station building facing the forecourt. London Road station has a quite nice historic station building and is in the middle of the urban area, whereas Southease station is not much more than the platforms and footbridge, and is more than a mile from anything other than the Youth hostel. Even Falmer, being tucked in between the stadium and bypass, with the giant modern footbridge somewhat squashing the remaining traces of the Victorian station is a greater contrast to Brighton than London Road.

I was using London Road(Brighton) because of distance

I like contrasts where you have quite a picturesque country station alongside a rather austere/brutal concrete station. Examples that spring to mind are:

West Malling - East Malling
Pevensey and Westham - Pevensey Bay
Garforth - East Garforth.

There's rather a sad contrast between Crowhurst, with is rather bleak, and every other station between Tonbridge and Hastings.

Eccles Road and Manchester Piccadilly (a Norfolk halt with a handful of trains per day, one of which in normal times is an interregional service to Liverpool!).

Deansgate and Salford Central/Manchester Victoria. They are close to each other and have a direct connection but do not have a direct service.

As there are no stopping trains that currently call at both Deansgate and Salford Central (nor indeed both Deansgate and Manchester Victoria) how do these pair(s) of stations accord with the OP's criteria?

I think Cheddington contrasts rather well with London Euston, in both station and Location.

Reading and St Erth

One a modern, high capacity glass-and-steel interchange.

The other quaint with canopies, a branch line and lower quadrant semaphores.

Newquay is a quiet single platform station at the end of a single track branch line and yet at least when I was there a few years ago it had through services to Edinburgh on summer saturdays. I don't recall for sure what route the edinburgh trains took but I imagine they went through birmingham then on to leeds and up the ECML. It also had services to paddington which at the time were run with HSTs.

I remember it feeling most incongruous riding on a voyager with foliage scraping against the windows.

London Euston and Atherstone, same line and also they are exactly 102 miles apart(via Watford Gap and Kilsby I assume).

Yep, I like this example.

I am quite keen on others in terms of location/demographic such as:

Bank Hall and Hightown

Wilmslow and Port Talbot

Grange over Sands and Flimby

Ashburys and Hathersage

It would have been even more noticeable when the Metropolitan Railway served the likes of Verney Junction, but even now the likes of Chesham in the Chilterns are in a very different world from say Kings Cross St Pancras

I would say Polesworth and Crewe, my reason being the sheer difference of size and frequency of these stations.

Are there any direct trains between Coventry and York?

I know there's already a fair number of examples for this major station, but I'll offer London Kings Cross and Shepreth (if the Cambridge - Maidstone service ever launches, that would change to London St Pancras and Shepreth).

From a quick look on realtimetrains it seems that coventry is served by Avanti, west midlands trains anc crosscountry. Neither Avanti or WMT go anywhere near york, so that leaves crosscountry. It looks like the XC services through coventry mostly go to/from Manchester with one or two terminating at birmingham, at least at the moment there don't seem to be any heading off to the east coast,

City Thameslink...being underground it’s dark, dingy...and in pre-Covid times, busy in rush hour.

On Cambridge services...
Ashwell & Morden, quiet little station in a cutting/green tunnel, hardly anyone about! Very rural setting save for the car Scrapyard at the Country end.

You could perhaps say the same about Balcombe on the Brighton MainLine...a very quiet location at the best of times.
