My Senior Railcard recently expired. I might have anticipated a reminder to renew, but there wasn't one. There's not a lot of point in renewing until I intend to go somewhere by rail. if relevant, which it probably isn't, I usually pay by Tesco Clubcard points.

Are they not bothering with reminders at present, or is it normal practice?

It's most likely just a temporary thing as a result of the pandemic, to help avoid promoting 'unnecessary' travel. Each year since I ordered a Network Railcard online in May 2016 (I had one issued at a station in 2015), I've had a reminder by email from the Railcard website reminding me to renew the railcard. However last year, I didn't receive any reminder. That was still in the middle of the first lockdown, so it doesn't surprise me. Whether any reminders were sent out during the period between June and September last year, when restrictions were at their most lenient, I couldn't say.

I would have expected a reminder to go out, but suitably re-worded.

I know everyone should check their railcard is valid before travelling, but "key workers" who need to travel might have other things on their mind in the middle of a pandemic. People whose travel is not 'key' could be advised to make sure they have a valid railcard when they feel able/are allowed to start travellig again.
