No, I’m saying that 4 million people are classified as Clinically Extremely vulnerable (source https://www.bmj.com/content/372/bmj.n467); this means they are more likely to suffer from Covid if infected.

Most will be vaccinated, but because the effectiveness of the vaccine is not 100%, that means some will still catch it, and because they are more vulnerable they are more likely to end up in Hospital than those who are not CEV. A study released earlier this week shows that the vaccine (first dose) is less effective in those undergoing cancer treatment, for example. Source https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-56351084

What I am saying, is that the Government will take this into account when deciding what to do with restrictions, and particularly later in the year with social distancing / face coverings etc. They may ask this group to take extra precautions, although I’d expect many of them to do that anyway. Whether Governemnt asks the rest of the population to take some precautions on behalf of these 4 million people is of course a matter for them.
So just like any other illness, the most vulnerable will need to take care and be aware of the additional risks as a result of their condition / treatment?

Can we stick to discussing vaccine side effects please

If anyone wants to discuss how long mask mandates might last for, please do so in a separate thread.

Thanks :)

As for side effects I didn't experience any with the Pfizer vaccine, unlike the flu one where I seemed to get a stiff arm.

For those who had side effects for vaccination one, what was it like for the second - the same, less?
The trend tends to be Pfizer - more chance of side effects after the second jab; Oxford AZ - more chance of side effects after the first jab.

But most people do not have any side effects at all.

I am not expecting any when my turn comes, but I will be careful when I book it, so as not to risk interrupt my busy schedule too much; I certainly don't want to risk missing out on playing football, for example, which may not be a wise thing to do if I have a headache or something ;)

I think just prepare for a couple of days really tired and in bed if necessary.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.

Should really be the case for any major vaccination. Plan to give yourself a quiet day or two afterwards if you can, just in case.

Straw poll from mates who've been given their first jab (AZ in all cases) seems to be that they've felt pretty rough for a day or so and then gotten on with their lives. Guess I got lucky, no ill effects at all.

I am currently enjoying AZ side-effects after my Saturday jab, I'd say like a moderate to slightly bad cold but it doesn't last that long.

Had mine last week as did 4 of my work colleagues. All AZ. All of us had the same side effects lasting 24-48hrs. Headache, shivers and feeling tired. Two of us had a metallic taste in our mouths for a couple of days. All have recovered fully with the exception of a warm and sore arm.

Same here. Had mine at 1:15pm last Monday. By 10:30pm felt shivery, but with hot and cold flushes. Went to bed and woke up in a sweat with a headache... Next day was wrecked and spent the day on the sofa with a hot water bottle. Arms were weak and struggled to lift a kettle. Left arm was aching around the area of the injection, feeling like someone was pressing a bruise. By Thursday felt fine, apart from the left arm which still hurt, and a loss of appetite. By Saturday the pain in the left arm had gone and I felt back to normal.

There was a BBC report here where the guy was flawed by the side effects and he researched why some are affected more than others - makes for an interesting read.

I had my first jab on Thursday morning last week. Felt fine at first then by teatime burning up, went to bed at 9pm and had an awful night’s sleep, basically flu-like symptoms. Started to feel better Friday lunchtime, and by Friday evening all that was left was a dull ache in my arm

Surprising that my arm felt very sore at the injection site for a good week or so after, couldn’t sleep on that side at all.

No side effects from mine ( AZ 1st on Friday ).

I made sure to book it for the least disruptive time for me - I had it on Friday at 16.40 after work ( I finish at 15.45 on Fridays ) but before the BBC news ( 18.00 ) and with a weekend plus a Monday off ahead so if I did get any side effects they would have cleared up before work again tomorrow...

Had my first AZ jab on Saturday. Apart from a sore arm (which developed about a day later) no side effects at all.

More or less the same experience but did feel a bit "coldish" about 24 hours later but some Lemsip / paracetamol put paid to that. I'm fine now (just under one week on)

My wife and I had our first jabs last week - no side effects as such apart from a mild headache that night which may or may not have been related. Also no reactions to flu jab last autumn.

AZ vaccine with no side-effects that I could spot. Fell asleep that afternoon but I had just been for a 15-mile bike ride so fairly normal. Incidentally car drivers were asked to wait 15 minutes before leaving in case of possible sudden side-effects but they were perfectly happy for me to ride off straight away. I did, but was ready to get off if I felt at all queazy.

I'm 60. Anecdotally it does seem to be the younger you are the more likely you are to have side-effects (or is it just that as you get older, aches and pains just seem normal?).

Had the first dose of the AZ one yesterday evening. Woke up with an aching arm and a headache but both of those have cleared up now.
Will see how I am over the next couple of days as my parents had the worst side effects on day 3!

O/AZ first dose four weeks ago at about 1530.
Mild headache by bedtime. That night a bit disturbed, feeling irrationally cold (so, had a mild fever). Headache still there, mild, next morning. A tiny bit lethargic but not enough to stop me walking a couple of miles. All gone aside from a really trivial ache in the arm at the point of injection within 24 hours. Arm recovered to the point of forgetting about it the next day.
Better that than "the real thing" I think.

Fit, healthy (but eligible) working early 20s here. The AZ vaccine left me feeling heavy, sore, and very thirsty with a number of other symptoms popping up over the day. The way I thought about it as I was going through the motions was that the vaccine side effects are better than getting actual COVID and putting my life and immediate future at unnecessary risk.

What I find strange is that people who have had Covid have many different symptoms and ill-effects or none, and the vaccine likewise has a range of different after-effects or none. It is a weird disease.

What is probably being seen is different responses by people's immune systems, which are the cause of most of the symptoms in the first place. Its really not that unusual. Additionally there will be people having symptoms as a result of something else but just happen to test positive for covid. The way that testing is being undertaken means that lots of assumptions are being made rather than properly being diagnosed as they normally would.

Anyway I hade my AZ jab yesterday, felt OK for most of the day but faded by the evening. This morning I feel utterly wiped out, my arm feels really heavy and I am utterly shattered. Its a good sign, but I just want to put my head on the keyboard and sleep right now.

Had my vaccine yesterday:

Right now I feel absolutely exhausted. Felt okay (little to no side effects yesterday), but I was up half the night with bad chills (I felt really cold!), and now my arm and all of my muscles are aching! Nothing a paracetamol and ibuprofen can’t fix up though! Indeed, stronger side effects mean the body is giving a more thorough fight to the spike protein contained in the jab, which should (hopefully) mean better protection.

This raises an interesting question though, would those who suffer stronger side effects to the covid vaccine (which causes the immune system to attack the spike protein generated by the vaccination) likely have stronger/more severe symptoms if exposed to Sars-CoV-2?

I'm no medic, but I wouldn't think so, as your body has developed the antibodies to combat it as a result of your couple of days lying low.

Ah apologies, I didn’t mean to suggest the vaccine was ineffective!

What I meant to ask was, if a person experiences more severe side effects as a result of their immune system attacking the spike protein generated by the vaccination, would they have likely suffered more severe symptoms if exposed to Sars-CoV-2 whilst unvaccinated?

Perhaps not (perhaps this is more down to age, general health, the strength of the immune system and viral load?), but just something that came into my mind earlier.

Still blinded as to whether I'm in the control group or not, but I had no side effects whatsoever other than some minor localised arm pain which lasted for couple of hours at most after my second maybe-J&J-maybe-saline jab.

First maybe-J&J-maybe-saline dose wasn't as fun and seemingly caused me to feel fatigued/headaches/muscle aches for a couple of days.

Of course, all these symptoms could just be entirely psychosomatic if I did get the placebo!
