Today it was revealed by DB Cargo that they had repainted a class 90 in a special livery. I reckon this is an ex grand central unit.
Your thoughts?

I thought the GC ones were already hired from DB due to sharing the same parent.

I'm fairly sure what you're actually seeing is them announcing a special advertising get-up for one of the many 90s they already own.

DB Cargo own 24 out of the 50 Class 90s, a number of which are stored - and they and their predecessor EWS have owned them since privatisation. The locos intended for Grand Central do belong to them and were going to be leased to GC (same parent company).

Of the other Class 90s, two belong to LSL and the other 24 are with Freightliner - one of which is a wreck and will almost certainly never work again.

My thoughts are that you have totally misinterpreted what DB’s tweet says - and I am being very polite.

Non offence taken and I agree with you

If this is the video I've seen this afternoon, it is 90 039 carrying the special livery. The livery is about the railway being the "backbone" and shows a spine incorporated into a predominately dark colour scheme.

Presumably it was part way through the repaint when GC pulled the plug so they found a new use for the black base colour?!

Saw it at Crewe IEMD 3 weeks ago

Just seen a convoy of four class 90's with a class 67 sandwiched in the middle heading out north of Crewe on the WCML (Webcam 5).

First two 90's we're in DB livery, 67 was in EWS and the two 90's at the rear looked like ex-GC (black)? But one (loco at position #4 in the convoy) had an "official" graffiti type paint job? Anyone know anymore about these?

Photo a screenshot courtesy of the Crewe webcam #5, you can just see the loco in question behind the 67. It's black, but has white "stencilled / graffiti" style writing on it:

Reported elsewhere as 90036, 90019, 67020, 90039, 90029 with 039 being the one with the 'backbone' livery

So DB actually DO operate some of their 90s? I thought they used 92s on all their electric-hauled freight

Quite the reverse, in fact! They only use their 92s on HS1 as they've isolated the TPWS (Train Protection Warning System) & AWS (Automatic Warning System), so they can only use the TVM (Transmission Voie-Machine) in cab signalling found on HS1.

The use of the 90s stopped during each lockdown, and has only just started up again after the third one.

DB's 92s haven't had the reliability mods that GBRf's have had, and they are notorious for electrical interference due to their GTO Inverters in the traction motors - particularly on the parts of the WCML where the signalling/lineside cables don't have a Return Screening Conductor in the troughs.

TL; DR: don't expect to see a 92 operating for DB on anywhere other than HS1.
