There is a ambulance parked across the street from me and I noticed that all the markings are in a foreign language. I have also noticed this on police vehicles. Does anyone know what language this is?

It is also bizarre as usually there is a English translation but it appears not in this case

It's not a foreign language - it's Gaelic!

It's absolutely not a foreign language. It's Scott's Gaelic so a native language of the British Isles such as Welsh, Cornish and Irish.

It may not be foreign, but for the vast majority of Scots it may as well be. Growing up in Fife, I’m not aware of ever meeting anyone who could speak it.

Maybe 1% to 2% of the Scottish population are fluent or part fluent Gaelic speakers.

Be interesting to see if this has changed any, as and when Scotland get round to completing their 2021 census in 2022.

Where was the photo taken, by the way?

The photo was taken in Girvan, South Ayrshire.

It's nothing new, the Scottish Ambulance Service re-designed its vehicle branding to incorporate bilingual English/Gàidhlig back in 2016

And I think that’s that question answered.
Thanks folks. :)
