Felt like I was having deja vu passing by Macclesfield station earlier this afternoon, when a second Pendolino passed through northbound hot on the heels of the regular hourly London Euston - Manchester Piccadilly service.

Checking Realtime Trains, I discovered that it was 390121 working the following Longsight - Manchester - Rugby - Longsight trip:
1T90 11:41 Longsight - Rugby
1T91 14:21 Rugby - Longsight

Is anyone able to advise what the purpose of this working was? It piqued my interest with the return working following so closely behind the scheduled passenger service.

Thanks in advance.

390121 Has just come off an exam.
1T90/1T91 runs every Sunday as a Test run for a unit coming off exam.
It has always run even in the Virgin days when the up service was routed via Crewe.

Does the driver have to do any extra duties on these workings to test systems, or is it the equivalent of a trip round the block to make sure it works?
