Yes, that would be an issue on some of the longer lines.

I have to admit that were they still in service on lines such as the Marshlink today, I would probably have to choose my carriage more carefully than in my youth !

Come on, there’s only one place to sit on a Thumper and you know it! :D

Unfortunately, for many years that was the smoking compartment, albeit removed in the 1990s, not that the lack of gangways stopped people smoking elsewhere in the train. Clearly not a problem now.

It is somewhat of an aberation that scrap gangways from other stock were never fitted to the 205s, particularly once they became the only non-gangwayed stock in the 1990s. I appreciate that there would have been some thought that replacements were on the way but nothing was ever properly planned for Uckfield and Marshlink as far as I can tell. Perhaps the point is that the four units for Marshlink were done and the 205s were seen primarily as a peak time only fleet on the Uckfield line.

Maybe the future owners of 205028 could see if they could fabricate a gangway connection from some other stock.

It was certainly the case in the early and mid 90s that the four gangwayed units were largely found on Ashford to Hastings, with the rest of the 205s doing Uckfield. They weren’t confined to the peaks, though Uckfield was always pretty empty during the day.

I wonder if there was some level expectation that one or both routes would probably have been electrified.

By the late 90s / early 2000s there seems to have been little or no effort to keep specific units on particular routes, though 205205 seems to have been rare to Uckfield for some reason. The 2 and 3 car units also seemed to be used fairly indiscriminately by this time, meaning the peak through services could often be 5 cars vice 6, though I don’t remember ever seeing it go as low as 4.

The sight of 207017 at London Bridge LL in the new millennium complete with its tungsten lighting and Trojan moquette was certainly an anachronism.

Wonder what aggregates industries are doing about the Flying Falcon shunter... I've got my eye on it tbh, if it was a couple of thousand for the loco and a couple of thousand for a alleys haulage to bluebell railway and they'd give me some siding space, id buy it

Cheers for that I'll read it later. Shame as there won't be anything for me to go to meldon for anymore .

Sold items will be moving out over the next few months, starting with those already up at Quarry.

Is the Green 08 listed as well? If so that's going to muck up the heritage side restarting, as I think that's the only loco?

A thumper would be ideal for the Swanage Railway, but I fear given the current financial climate and that we have spent large sums of money on the current DMUs we have it won't happen any time soon.

Some of the stock like the CEP carriage appears to be in decent condition but has recieved the attention of the graffiti artists.

The poor old Connex thumper looks quite far gone. it would be a travesty if the green thumper doesn't find a good home though.

31452 and former Motorail GUV 86443 were the first departures from the Quarry yesterday, both off to Eastern Rail Services at Great Yarmouth

By rail or road? I don't know how stock ever manages to get in/out of Meldon by road for anyone who has been along there. So steep, narrow and twisty.

I can absolutely understand what you mean, and especially for something as large and heavy as a class 31 some phenomenal driving skills must no doubt be required though somehow they must be able to manage it as the 31s mainline ticket will now be long expired so doubt that rail is an option. I’m pretty sure all the oversized off-road tipper trucks used at the former quarry had to be brought in this way back in the day also seem to recall warning signs alongside the roadway back in the early 90s.

From WNXX site:
Peds on the road...
31190 (HTLX) has completed its transfer to its new home, being delivered to the Plym Valley Railway yesterday after its Easter stop off at Allely's. The back load from the transfer of 31190 is 31452 (ERSL) which has been extracted from the Dartmoor Railway for transport to Great Yarmouth.

Absolutely heartbreaking to see 205028 in that state. It wasn’t really looked after from the start there, ISTR it was involved in a derailment not long after arriving.

Sadly over 15 years of open storage has probably made it beyond saving now.

The question of how the 31 was moved (obviously by road as Alleys were the contractors) has prompted me to ask a question.

I understand that a locomotive has to have a main line ticket to operate on the main line. However, does the expiration of a ticket mean that it can't be moved, even being towed, via the main line?

Thanks.

Yes it's always sad to see a thumper in distress. The broken windows will be a big problem for water ingress.

I'm sure someone else will elaborate but there are certain conditions under which a locomotive can be moved dead-in-tow on the mainline. I think the wheels and axles have to be inspected and certified, or something like that? For example, a few years ago (2018?), Mallard was towed to Doncaster by a main line-certified Deltic for display at the station and some kind of event.

There's a bit of an insight here:

UAT (Ultrasonic Axle Test) and FTR (Fitness To Run) required seemingly.

Vehicles also need to be registered on the system (National Vehicle Register/R2 and TOPS) and have appropriate certifications so that they can be included in a train consist.

Today I walked the Sourton to Okehampton section of the Granite Way footpath which runs alongside the railway from Meldon to Okehampton Nd on the old formation south of Meldon.

At Meldon an Allelys wagon appeared to be removing the Sturgeon flat wagon which is shown the the stock sale Web site as sold.

Couldn't get a good view from path as the action was going on between a gap in the carraiges.

Th Sturgeon wagon travelled up from Dartmoor today. This will be used by the LMS10000 project to carry the 58 chassis while modifications are made to the chassis, ready to fit it to our EM2 bogies.
We are about to begin our "GAINING TRACTION" Fund - to raise £180,000 to create 10000's rolling chassis including refurbishment of the traction motors. It will be a giant step forward.

I wonder what price the thumper would have sold for.
Both Thumpers have since sold and have moved to the Caledonian Railway at Brechin. The Green one (runner) will be used on the line, while the grey one (the non runner) will be used as part of an alternative power source project with Aberdeen university.
