This is just to tell the interviewers what you’ll be using as your example. No need for STAR when writing it out, just during the interview itself.

Have they given you this info in advance then?
Hi stingy, no I was just going through every question I could find. Funnily enough I didn’t get any of those three tricksters I was worried about.

Hello guys, congratulation for passing your assessment. Sorry to bother your peaceful time with my troubles. I sat for the psychometric assessment in October with Northern passed other elements but failed the stage 3 directory search with audio "TEA-OCC. I didn't know there was only one tone on stage 3 and I was completely lost on counting and searching for the symbols.
6 months has passed and I'm re-sitting it privately with Railway Competence Group in 2days. Some threads I read said not to worry about phone directory or business, but 2matching symbols. Is this true? And going forward from there to other parts that are involved in the process of passing, i.e. the Computer assessment and MMI assessment?

Please your contribution is highly valued and appreciated in advance.
Thank you.

My friend, providing it is the same test the opc do, YES one million percent, focus on the double matching digits and nothing els. Also note there are not other matching shapes, so you don’t need to even worry about the key card, simply focus on the double matching symbols, any of them And circle them pay attention to nothing else on the sheet.

Also note be quick, the form I did had 10 answer boxes for the beeps so I thought there was going to be ten sets of beeps and based my speed on how far down the ten answer boxes we were, this almost caught me out as there was only 6 sets of beeps and then test finished.

Thank you my friend. If I remember, in my first failed assessment, we were only given 45secs to answer the 3rd question. As such I was nervous, anxious and I panicked, most importantly, I did not understand that circling symbols only which didn't help. Hopefully, if I can get through to the computer elements and mmi, I'll be successful.

My friend, please could you clarify what you mean by 26 set of beeps? Do you mean 123456 beeps, then another set of 6 beeps 6x? Thanks you

On the third section of the test you have to listen to the number of beeps whilst circling the double symbols. Whilst your circling symbols it will play beeps which you will count, then the tape will ask how many beeps did you just hear, you write it in the box and then go back to circling symbols, and it will then play another set of beeps and then ask you how many you’ve heard. It will do that six times whilst your circling the symbols. It does it like that to keep interrupting you from the symbol task.

The number of beeps each time ranged from about 2 to about 12.

Fabulous! I got it now. Thank you for the explanation in full details. Much appreciated.
Any tips about the MMI? Please...

No my friend, I do not know the questions since I haven't made it to that level before. Thank you
All the mmi questions are on this forum if you use the search function at the top to search mmi questions, however form memory the core six are

1. When have you carried out a task in the face of dicculty
2. When have you dealt with an emergency situation
3. What role have you done similar to train driver
4. When have you preserved to learn, or they may phrase it when have you been on a course for longer than two weeks
5. When have you undertaken a task and being careful not to make a mistake
6. A time you worked to set rules and procedures

Some others I remember

1. When have you worked for long periods alone
2. When have you worked for a long period on repetitive tasks
3. When have you had to make a hard decision
4. When have you solved a difficult problem

That’s about all I can remember from my prep, they say make sure you have two examples for both as if they think one answer is weak they will ask for a new one, didn’t happen to me but happens a lot I gather.

Honestly you're a LEGEND. I currently work as a Train Despatcher, so I believe I have plenty examples experience and scenarios that I can put into use, if I don't have brain freeze on that day lol. However, you've done me really well. Thank you

No probs, have a search on here though in case I missed any. But make sure you nail those core six really well.

There is six questions in the mmi and these are the same six questions that anyone gets everytime an mmi is taken. Its not 6 questions from 10 or 12 as some people say But the same 6 everytime

ive sat the mmi twice. I got failed the first time at the ops which I thought was harsh and re sat it at ROG and passed. I was talking to the assessor afterwards and he said everybody gets the same 6 questions every time a test is taken and this is one of the reasons behind only been able to sit it twice which makes sense.

emergency situation
worked for long periods of time alone
done a job similar to that of a train driver
worked to rules and procedures
worked to a high standard while encountering difficulty
can't remember the 6th

they may be worded differently but that's basically what your looking at

Yes 2nd time around I sat it privately. All the questions are straight forward if you think about it. You just need good life experience of each one.

describe a time you have worked for long periods of time alone?

some people may never have worked alone for long periods so it’s hard to answer

With regard to lone working, I was reading on here only the other day about people who have passed using going fishing as an example, in their spare time. Think I have read also about people going long distance cycling, which I used to do myself. Cycling is good because you have the concentration aspect, especially when there is a risk of fatigue, planning rest stops, etc.

Not actually sure how the fishing example works, I imagine that whilst you are waiting for a fish to tug your line, you may sit down and read a newspaper which would be classed as alternative distraction. I think in my CBI, I spoke about working alone as a security guard but I do not think I passed with that. I explained how I would be watching the CCTV and walking to the window to watch camera blind-spots every so often, if only to keep awake during the night. I imagine that my assessor probably thought I was watching Total Recall for the umpteenth time.

When did you take your MMI @Anthony R ? I think the 'high standard' question used to be phrased as, "When did you solve a difficult problem?" Maybe this begs the question about the standards to which you were working when you were trying to overcome the problem.

The 'working alone' question used to be in the old CBI, the predecessor to the MMI. I have never taken the MMI since but I am thinking that working alone would be covered under the question about when you have done a role similar to train driver. Maybe if you have described a role where you were working alone, the interviewer might not need to ask the question.

Finished mine about a week ago, 5e high standards one was phrased as no mistake. But no questions relating to being alone, instead. I got

Emergency,
No mistake
Completed a difficult task
Rules and procedures
Similar to train driver (guess that could have covered aloneness working)
When persevered to learn

The additional fly by wire questions I got were;

What would you do if you saw a colleague going outside of procedure
Would you ever not follow procedure
What would you do if a colleague was struggling with work

A lot of people’s say they try and tease the right answers and keywords out of you, which they absolutely do, but they also absolutely try and lead you to the cliff to see if you will jump off and hang yourself. When she thought I was going to put my foot in it you should have seen her face light up with anticipation only to look some what saddened when I didnt. Lol

All in all didn’t like the experience at all and glad I won’t have to go through it again.

Re your last para that sounds about right. I don't work on the railways but do recruit using STAR-based behavioural assessment. If someone is struggling in an interview l will regularly ask "Can you give me another example of when....". Certainly when l'm applying for jobs l always have at least two worked through examples.

Good way of putting it, where you say fly by wire questions. If you were asked about these questions on the spot, I can see how people would be caught out, if they did not know what the interviewer was trying to find out.

The first two seem obvious to me but I have seen that third one before on the forum, about a colleague struggling with work, not sure where. Was this one asked as part of the main question about persevering to learn something?

I think it would be funny if someone had gone into the interview and turned round and said to the interviewer, "Why do you keep interrupting me, it is most impolite?" You know how you are interrupted half way through every other answer that you give.

It was a little weird, Shen just threw that colleague question in a time total random between questions.

Funny you should mention the interruption lol. One of my answers ended being a totally different answer because she’s kept interrupting and totally changed the question with her questions, and the star method went out the window because she just jumped all around the place. It was annoying lol. So for the rest of questions after that I made a point of clearly stating each part, ie, situation, task, action etc. So she’s couldn’t throw me all over the place, and when she went off on a tangent made sure I went back to the exact spot I left off.

I felt I fluffed one part, the question she asked how do I concentrate, i told her what I do, she then asked what else, then again what else’s, then again what else, Jesus wept, iv given you like ten million things. It’s one of those things that I just do, and dont really have a prob concentrating for extended periods, I don’t know what she wanted, but I clearly didn’t give her the keyword she wanted. Lol

I am wondering if the colleague question was unique to you, based on your answers to the Situation Judgement Exercise. I think the idea of the interruptions is to put you on the spot, maybe find out what your tolerance is to stress.

When she asked you about four times about how you maintained concentration, or maybe any other question come to that, I think they are trying to see if you deviate from your original answer or if you stick to your guns. The CBI/MMI often reminds me about the film Marathon Man with Dustin Hoffman where the Nazi dentist keeps asking him if it is safe and he gives two completely different answers each time.

I know in other threads, people have described maintaining concentration in relation to the question about doing a role similar to that of a train driver. The frequent example seems to be going on a long distance road trip and demonstrating concentration by looking out for road signs, speed limits, traffic lights, weather conditions, etc.

yep most likely, totally screwed the set pooch. I had only that morning done a practice set, and dissatisfied and satisfied scale were then flipped on the actual one, but I think I was a answering opposites if that makes sense. Also I’m just not great with them, one question about your angry boss getting in your car and doesn’t wear a seatbelt. I wouldn’t be in that situation, i wouldn’t move until he put it on, but the example isn’t that, she didn’t make him but chose to drive slower. Well driving slower does help the situation somewhat, ie he won’t be as I injured in an accident but likewise it doesn’t help at all with just keeping him safe And the law. So I find the them ambiguous and unclear, although I might just overthink these things. But thankfully wont have to do it again again now.

The actual interview itself wasn’t too hard I supposed, but at the same time it was. Definitely had to be alert and on the ball to not slip up, she literally wrote everything verbatim as I said it as well, and as a result she asked me questions which I had already given a load of detail on and answered, made me think the lengthy note taking had meant she’s missed a lot of what I Said, which worried me at the time, but guess she got enough.

Something rings a bell about that SJE question about the angry boss not wearing a seat belt but it is over a year since I last had a train driver assessment bar the MMI. It makes me wonder if it would be easier to record the MMI rather than having to write copious notes. I am surprised with speech recognition technology these days, they could not convert the interviewee responses to text. I guess now you are waiting for the manager interview.

Yes going to do a DMI at some point. All very exciting, I’m hoping it will be face to face rather than zoom, but alas I expect zoom. Really hoping to get through. I desperately need a change now, been doing what I’m doing far too long and beyond ready never to do it again. Lol. Your a driver now aren’t you? You passed all this stuff ages ago? I have seen helpful posts of yours pop up whilst doing research.

I did my dmi via zoom. Very odd experience indeed. :s
