This was the message displayed on the departure screens for platforms 15 - 19 at London Victoria today, Easter Monday, at 4.05pm.

Surely this is wrong? Possibly due to a programming error not recognising today as a Bank Holiday?

That aside, is there a blanket ban at Victoria for evening departures? I'm thinking of the return portion of Super Off-Peak Returns where the departure station is outside the former Network South East area and the destination is within. E.G. Return portion of a Gatwick to Shrewsbury Super Off-Peak Return.

It's complete nonsense.

But it's GTR, so is to be expected ;)

Not only do such restrictions not generally apply at all on Bank Holidays, even on a normal weekday a York to Dorking (or wherever) Super Off Peak would be valid on literally any train out of Victoria.

It will be a generic message programmed to apply on all weekdays. It's not entirely accurate, as you say, although I would imagine the majority of passengers would hold tickets to/from London Terminals/Victoria, for whom it would be correct on any Monday that wasn't a Bank Holiday.

On non-Bank Holidays it should say "Some Super off Peak fares not valid on this train; please check" or similar

That's what I had thought. Unfortunately I wasn't able to check if the barriers were coded to reject as I was travelling on Oyster. Having said that it will be interesting to see if I'll Oyster charges me peak or off-peak rates for my journeys today!

You can't trust announcements when it comes to this sort of thing. GWR are just as bad. I once made a journey in the evening peak between Paddington and Bath using a combination of Off Peak Returns.

Before departure the guard made a menacing announcement that the train was a peak train and that super off peak and off peak tickets weren't valid, threatening a penalty fare if one was used. I knew my tickets were perfectly valid and when the guard came round I presented my tickets, he looked at them carefully, smiled and moved on.

You'll be charged off-peak.

Half the problem is not only do people who operate the screens not have any idea about ticket validities, they also have no idea what messages are being displayed when things are set to automatically post
