On my way east on a MIA TPE towards Piccadilly and just met an Avanti 390 heading towards Oxford Road.

I was rather surprised, where will it be going?

Glasgow. They're diverted via Bolton due to engineering works. Calling at Crewe, Wilmslow and Stockport en route but apparently not Man Picc anymore as they were causing problems with dispatch and dwell times on platform 13/14.

Not sure of the exact circumstances here but when I've seen them there in the past they've been on diversion when the main WCML between Crewe and Wigan/Preston has engineering closures

Edit: Appears from some posts just before me that I was right.

Thanks.

I used Chat Moss instead of the Warrington Central line as that too is closed at Birchwood.

Bridge replacement of the WCML line over the Fiddlers Ferry line. These diversions also used during the Acton Grange blockade. I think Trafford Park re-signalling is this weekend too.

In normal times there are/were ECS Pendolinos positioning overnight to/from Longsight via Bolton or Chat Moss, from Preston/Lancaster, routed via Oxford Road.
The equivalent Edge Hill ECS service from Preston run via Crewe (reverse), rather than the direct route via Huyton.

I took a Class 390 from Stockport to Glasgow once. Went via Chat Moss.

Didn't know about the diversions until I saw this thread early this morning so made a last minute trip to the car park Sackville Street to capture and 2 turned up at once!

Thanks both got very lucky with the timing!

Was today the last day of diversions or is there plans for more of them in the future?

Great photo. I don't suppose you have the high resolution photo for my 1080p laptop background do you please?

It is!, great photo.
I see the old 'Palace Hotel' has changed name once again.

IHG (who own, among others, Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza) took it over from Principal a few years ago and rebranded it to their luxury arm Kimpton
I was underwhelmed by the restaurant "Refuge" on a sort of birthday date around the time of the rebranding - let's hope it's improved since. Photo is excellent by the way.

How many times has this happened?
I saw one go through Bolton in 2013, I'm sure it was a Monday morning - it could have been overrunning engineering works. Obviously it was being dragged.
