Hi,
Does anybody know if the direct Summer services from Paddington to Pembroke Dock will be running this Summer please?
GWR website shows journeys upto June 12th but requiring a change.
Thanks.

I don't think it is running this year due to the Timetable influenced by COVID and difficulties in GWR Traincrews having to do their annual route refreshing.

Thanks, that's a real shame especially given it might be quite a lot of people's first holiday there I think. Was up for another stay bit can't face cramming onto a local service with luggage (bad enough even in October in a normal year when the weather is nice.)

What is being done this year is a compromise taking into account the lack of GWR traincrew route knowledge west of Carmarthen, which will not be regained in time to run summer trains to Pembroke.

On Sats from 22nd May to 11th Sept inclusive

0929 Swansea-Carmarthen (arr 1012) is an additional service.
Connecting into TfW 1055 Carmarthen to Tenby (1140) and Pembroke Dock (1219).

0848 Paddington-Swansea is extended to Carmarthen (arr 1230).
Connecting into TfW 1258 Carmarthen to Tenby (1343) and Pembroke Dock (1418).

1539 Swansea-Carmarthen (arr 1622) is an additional service.
Connecting into TfW 1700 Carmarthen to Tenby (1745) and Pembroke Dock (1820).

1122 Swansea-Paddington starts back from Carmarthen at 1032.
Connects out of TfW 0909 ex-Pembroke Dock, Tenby dep 0939, Carmarthen arr 1026.

1726 Swansea-Paddington starts back from Carmarthen at 1636.
Connects out of TfW 1509 ex-Pembroke Dock, Tenby dep 1544, Carmarthen arr 1629.

The workings appear unbalanced because there is an ECS leg off the 0848 ex-Padd taking the stock back to Swansea for servicing prior to the afternoon trip. All the above call at Llanelli and Pembrey & Burry Port en-route between Swansea and Carmarthen (or v.v.)

If you’re not keen on using the TfW connections is there any practicality in using the GWR services as far as Carmarthen as a railhead for your destination in West Wales, perhaps hire a car from there or similar?

Ah, thanks so much for that.
That certainly makes it a more attractive option.
(Remembers a previous return trip changing at Swansea with delays resulting in a mad scramble dealing with two people's luggage and one of us considerably more "mature" and not able to rush.)
We don't drive and the return in the morning is a tad earlier than we might like (have to return the accommodation keys first into the office on town) but we'll see, cheers again!

I wonder whether there will ever be Paddington to Pembroke Dock through trains again.

Yes, once Covid subsides and crew refreshing is possible - they were in the plan for this summer until the 2nd wave happened.

There were also plans to run more direct Paddington - Carmarthen trains on Mondays to Fridays and Saturdays. GWR are hoping to be able to bring these in from December, subject to Covid restrictions and Lockdown not being ramped up again towards the winter months.

These extra trains are shown as unadvertised in the May 2021 TT so hopefully as you say these can be ‘livened-up’ in a future ramp up of service.
