Any idea what standard they are testing at? I think they are looking for people with an engineering background.

Any one know the salary range?
Sb usually 37k starting, 46.5k when fully trained, 34.5 hr week, DOO bonus probably around 3k plus whatever else they give you. Don't know if they get paid extra for staying away from home or travel time to depot etc. Think there is also a shift allowance on top of that as well.

Hi guys

I applied and got a role with SB rail last year but I still have job notifications on my emails and SB Rail are recruiting again! Closing date end of may for anyone wanting to get into the rail industry. :) here’s the link xx

Hi Steph

Do you know much about the travel situation and staying away? Is it literally open to anyone in any location who is willing to travel and stay away in digs or do they prefer candidates to be within a certain distance.

The advert states ‘national’ so I assume they’ll put people into digs and allow travel to starting location for what I presume will be a 35hr shift split over 4 days / nights

National wide travel would normally be required.

I'm a trainee driver operator on nationwide otm's just now. Travel is paid, my travel time door to door is paid, accommodation is paid (we usually book holiday inns to get the points lol) breakfast, and £25 dinner allowance for food in the hotel or can claim it back receipted. We are paid and a lunch allowance and we also get £20 per night for every night in a hotel away from home which is paid every 6 months. Some places dont pay travel time from home to depot/site though which may be reflected in the SB 34.5 hr week.

Not sure how similar SB contracts will be

I would suggest it means you can both drive the tamper around and also know how to operate it, tamping the track.
I joined Colas as a driver operator. If someone is after a train driving license only, this is not the job. A very in depth job. You will need to learn how to tamp track, control the tamping from the computer and be able to do basic maintenance on the OTM. Thats alongside driver rules and regs, handling and route learning.

It’s a way of getting a licence nonetheless, which is what it’s all about.

It is indeed another route. It's a much longer route though and an engineering or railway background will definetly help, as you'll usually be trained up to do maintenance/repairs and operating the machines first before starting driving. I've been in my job nearly 2 years now and I'm only now about to start my driving course.

That's a bit of a p*sstake! How long is the driving course and is it being done through SB or do they use a third party? All the best with the training
