Hi guys,

So I am a new member here :) and have recently been in a bit of a struggle trying to find old GWR or LNER HST first class seats for sale (From trains destined to go to scrap)

I contacted CFBOOTH (they said they do not have any at the moment if anyone has any update when they will have some that would be great)

I also contacted Angel trains who said Arlington would have them (I contacted them and a person named Carl emailed me once asking what I would offer them disappeared and hasn’t replied since) and they also said Porterbrook would have some (They guy there called Gary replied 2 times before disappearing and never replying again saying he would contact me in may however this would most probably not happen)

I then contacted GWR directly but they said that they were under Department of Transport control and that they had to reject offers of that kind due to that reason.

I then contacted DFT about this but they never mentioned as such and my only option is from EBay for £350 which is obviously a rip off.

Any suggestions or help on how I could obtain these seats because I’m struggling a lot.

I have attached a photo of the kind of train seats I’d love to have :)

You could try Booth’s again: they had a vehicle delivered for disposal last week that is ex-GWR and half first/half standard class. Don’t know, though, if it has been stripped of seats for spares before arrival, though.

Ok I will do and will update if I get them or not :)

Update:

They said they do not have any GWR carriages as such and only scotrail ones, any help ? :)

Yes. The ScotRail ones are ex-GWR. There was a half first/half standard vehicle delivered from ScotRail recently - it has GWR type seats/interior.

I’ve just noticed a pair of LNER HST Mk3 1st class seats for sale on eBay: buy it now for £110. Seems like a bargain to me.
Type in hardware railwayana on eBay search and you’ll see them

The caveat with the price however will be the fact that you need to organise the transport yourself - fine if you have a large vehicle or a van but otherwise additional costs will be incurred in hiring a van etc.

If you managed to get some seats from CF Booth or other scrap dealer as mentioned in the first post, I imagine you would have to hire a van or find a man with a van anyway.
I got two buffers from CF Booth some years ago and made two trips over the Snake Pass to get them home with the back of the car weighed down. The buffers have since done two house moves with me!

Thanks a lot!

While searching I also found this!

These days though, seems like CFbooths are quite busy / have changed when they normally receive train carriages and I used to call them and they would say they had given all the seats away because there’s a waiting list now (which I never knew existed lol ) but it always seems like the eBay resellers get to the seats before me , anyways wow the buffers would have been quite a journey!

What class do these seats belong to?

Well spotted! The GWR seats look a bit classier than the LNER ones to my mind but it’s all down to your budget and how far you want to travel to get them.

A handful more ex-LNER first class seats are shortly to arrive in the storage sidings of Ely, in the form of vehicle 40705.

@FirstclassHST I see that the eBay seller with the GWR double seats also listed a couple of single seats with a 'buy it now price' of £275. They both went very quickly - did you manage to purchase?

I had no idea there were single seats available however, luckily I have managed to get one double seat pair which should be delivered this week fingers crossed!

That's good news! I used to pay a lot of money to sit in those seats when travelling on an HST and very nice they were too :D

Personally I think it's great when items such as seats can be re-used and up cycled rather than just ending up as landfill which is what I imagine would happen to the majority of non-recyclable parts from carriages.

I really wanted a Business Premier seat from a Eurostar 373 but sadly any parts being salvaged from those sets was a non-starter.

It had been a 5 year struggle of mine to get them and finally having ordered them really is a milestone in life espically when you’d normally be expected to pay around £200-300 sometimes to sit on those seats for a few hours, nearly the same price I bought them for and I can keep them forever! Lol

yeah honestly upcycling these kind of parts and selling them would really help people like us out and may benefit the company scrapping them / train company too

oh no :( don’t worry though I can bet you one day you’ll get there too! You can always buy these GWR double seats ;)

After 5 years of waiting, around 4 months of haggling and contacting people I am happy to announce: I finally own GWR HST first class seats! (Double pair) thanks to everyone who has helped me on this journey and whilst I’m still new to this rail forum, the forum really seems like one big rail family helping each other out!

I’ll attach a picture of what they look like after a few hours of deep cleaning (a lot of gunk was removed)

They look great and have scrubbed up really well! That final interior refurbishment of first class by GWR was excellent. You can now recreate that authentic HST experience from home:D

I have to confess, that inspired by this thread, I've succumbed to temptation and that seller has been able to supply me with a single seat which is being delivered next week. It will be a reading chair in my office!

Out of interest, how heavy are they and have you had to add additional support so they stand up? From memory these seats were partly bolted to the side of the carriage.

They look superb!

All you need now is to build an extension on the house to fit a class 43 HST loco! ;)

If you don't mind me asking, how much were the seats, as I might try and get some if they price is right. :D

Thanks a lot! You’ve really encouraged me to keep on going with these seats as well so thank you! Of Course! I can sit on these seats the whole day and act like I’m on a journey lol.

That’s great that you’ve been inspired by this thread and I can’t wait for you to share pictures of your new single seat!!!!! This is just a reminder to everyone that no matter how hard the struggle might seem you always get rewarded in the end:)

They were quite heavy I had to get the Neighbor to help but you can drag them so it wasn’t that much of a struggle you were right about the heaviness , they do need additional support which I am working on although, single seats would have one and a half side of that support already completed (see attached photo)
Your rights these seats were bolted and I found that out through my deep cleaning

hope to see your seat pic soon,
FirstclassHST

The seller has a double set for sale. As far as I'm aware all the singles have been sold...

Your lucky to have found a single for your office can’t wait to see the pics!!! You can have the same experience at home (without it being temporary:))

Thanks a lot :D , honestly I would build an extension but not sure if the council or neighbours would like it lol , I got them for £300 and (£90 delivery but that’s cause I live in London) I think you should go for it! It’s an excellent icon and surely will be a great convo starter in your house. I think you can bargain on the seats too the seller put up the best offer label not to long ago

Your welcome. :D

As much as I'd really want to, I don't have £300 laying around to buy them sadly! :(

Not only do I not have a spare £300, I also have no idea how I'd get it to my home anyways as I live in a 1st floor flat and don't have all that much space really.

You're welcome! Thanks for that picture - I'll be sure to upload some pictures once it's presentable (and if I manage not give myself a hernia getting it in place!) That picture of the single seat is useful, thank you. I'll be looking into getting something fabricated that matches the side that would've been attached to the carriage floor. I've seen this done on other salvaged seats :D

Don’t worry! When the time comes around I hope that you can find something which could be an equivalent, maybe just a head rest if available:) all the best!

No problem! I always like to help other people and lol good luck with not getting injured stay safe! If you don’t mind me asking , how much did you pay for the seat just so I can have an idea for the future if I need more lol if you have any idea on how I could do this with the double seats do let me know. So far I’m thinking just putting some wood to act as a base for the seats?

Sure, it was £275. Not cheap but not a bad price considering that I have seen similar items from both GWR and LNER go for a lot more. I do think that railwayana items like this are likely to appreciate in value. I think that there will always be a lot of nostalgia associated with HSTs and BR era trains.

That’s not a bad price to be honest I’ve seen them go for £350 and even £550!! I agree with you they go higher in value and the HSTs especially have a lot of value in products like this
