Hi, just wondering about the North Western Trains services to London Euston from Manchester Airport.

Does anyone have a photo of one of the timetables or maybe a link to a PDF copy of the timetable they can share on here?

As I was wondering how long did these services take from one end to the other?

Thanks. :D

BTW these were using class 322 trains from 1998-99.

Not quite what the OP was asking, but often used to travel on the 2010 Northbound service out of Euston which arrived Manchester Victoria at c. 2330, having called at places such as Tamworth, Warrington Bank Quay and Newton-le-Willows. Fare was something like £15 (Standard single) or £25 (First class single). This would have been Summer 1999. Can't remember if the one for the Airport ran separately or split from the Manchester Victoria/Rochdale portion en route.

I was referring to those short lived North Western Trains services that went direct from Manchester to Euston using the class 322s. :) 1998-99 they ran.

A trawl around on here has located a previous 2012 thread on this topic (link below) which indicates a Euston - Manchester Airport journey time of c. three hours. Post #24 refers in particular with timetable info.

Ah ok, thanks just had a look through that. :D

It only shows times for Saturdays though.

Can't find anything for weekday workings. :(

Just to add that the Rochdale-Euston services were separate from the Manchester Airport-Euston services, as the former were operated by 158's, whilst the latter were normally operated with 322's (though the occasional 309 did appear).

Thanks for confirming. Others have previously advised that a portion for/from Blackpool North usually split/joined at Warrington Bank Quay, which was otherwise an unadvertised call.

Yes, I'd forgotten that bit. Newton-le-Willows was an official stop but Warrington BQ was just to couple up the respective portions.

I did both the Airport & Rochdale services to/from London whilst they operated. The 158's did struggle rather going down the WCML & you certainly noticed the gradients.

The 2012 thread refers to (SX) weekday timings.
Ah, I though SX was Saturday or Sunday only.:rolleyes:
My mistake!

I'm not surprised that a 158 is a bit out of it's depth on a line like the WCML! :D

From the May 1999 timetable:

Mon-Fri

From Euston:
1125 Euston-Man Air (2h47)
1440 Euston-Man Air (3h18)
1925 Euston-Man Air (2h54)
2155 Euston-Man Air (2h59)

From Manchester Airport:
0620 Man Air-Euston (3h22)
1019 Man Air-Euston (2h55)
1419 Man Air-Euston (2h54)
1819 Man Air-Euston (2h41)

Thank you, that's great!

Exactly what I was looking for. :D

A journey time between 2h41 and 3h22 isn't bad, considering that even now, the time using a Pendolino to Piccadilly, then a connecting train to Man Airport takes around 2h53mins still!

At the absolute fastest about 67.6mph; at slowest about 53.9mph. I think that demonstrates they were not exactly designed to be 'fast' workings! ;)

What stations did the 322s stop at and did they run fast at all on the Southern WCML? :D
It's all in the 2012 thread referenced earlier, which you say you have looked at ..... (https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/first-north-western-manchester-london.61713/)
Code:
Manchester Airport 06:19 10:19 14:19 18:19
Alderley Edge 06:36 10:28 14:28 18:28
Sandbach 06:47 10:39 14:39 18:39
Tamworth Low Level 07:40 11:27 15:26 19:24
Watford Junction 09:21 12:52 16:52 20:36
London Euston 09:42 13:17 17:13 21:00

London Euston 11:25 14:40 19:25 21:55
Watford Junction 11:42 15:02 19:43 22:12
Tamworth Low Level 13:02 16:33 21:05 23:25
Sandbach 13:51 17:35 21:56 00:21
Alderley Edge 14:02 17:46 22:07 00:32
Manchester Airport 14:12 17:58 22:19 00:57
The timing was generally lax/generous, remember that there weren't four tracks north of Tamworth then, the Tamworth stop was generally a long one which suited the smokers on board.

I used it once because it was there, from Manchester to London and (I think) back again one day. It was certainly cheap.

Did they run on the fast lines at any time in the journey?
I think so, generally they were pathed to depart Euston just after the faster Virgin Trains services had gone, also the extended calls at Tamworth allowed for overtaking opportunities.

I bet it was. :D

Yes, probably most of the time, but I don't recall the details.
That's alright, was a while ago afterall. So long ago I wasn't even born yet! :D

Ah that's interesting, you'd never see a 319/321 on the fasts now for example.

The time I went on it, after Rugby it was via Northampton and Slow Lines all the way to Euston (both ways)
Thank you for the insight. :)

Any ideas which crews worked these routes. I'm pretty sure Vic did the Rochdale services. I would imagine the Airport's were Picc drivers with either Picc or Airport guards.

I believe the Rochdale's used to couple up/decouple with a Blackpool portion at WBQ

I made a thread about this once you could travel on these trains between Euston and Watford Junction.
These services last ran on 13th May 2000.

Such a shame the original plans for the Adelantes/Class 180s to London never went ahead, which died when FirstBus took full control of GWR, and thus NWT. The white/blue/orange "exploding Xmas pudding" livery looked quite smart, but would have been a bugger to keep clean.

Unlikely to have been 13 May - try two weeks later - I travelled on one in the final week - 158756 to Manchester Victoria from London Euston on Monday 22 May 2000 (1150 from Euston) and 158758 back the following day (1526 from Manchester Victoria) - 3 hours and 16 minutes each way.

I think they had been scaled back by then however to just the Rochdale - London - Manchester - London - Rochdale 158 diagram.

Pretty sure they were indeed pick-up/set-down only.
That's my recollection. In which case, could one have "legitimately" travelled between Watford Junction and Euston on the now defunct FNW service(s)?

Is there a picture of this livery anywhere?
