Correct - it's to theoretically reduce the time needed for an evacuation through the emergency passages into the service tunnel. With a 200m train you could in theory have a 87m walk between even the closest part of the train to the nearest exit.

Agreed. Although based on E*'s track record of (non-)evacuations I'm not sure that this makes the blindest bit of difference.

Euronews reported that a German train came the tunnel yesterday. As all the UK media were reporting on the miners being rescued I switched over and saw the ticker tape on Euronews. There was nothing else.

Any details anyone?

The ICE went into the tunnel at the French end for a distance of 1.1km, driver changed ends and it came out. All part of the 'tests'.

It will be on display at St Pancras from 0600 on October 19, having been shunted into position by the Mak diesels of Eurotunnel. Well that's the plan but dont rule out a change.

Most reports it have it coming in at platform nearest the champagne bar. Get there early and bag a seat!

For the (obvious) press attention this will get, I can't see how it could be any other platform!

Given Eurostar has suddenly decided to announce new trains and bring a mock-up to London, I can only hope we're going to see some proper competition in the years to come.

Is that the test to simulate a Eurostar train in the snow? Well, all but the coming back out bit.

On the thorny matter of Eurostars and snow, do you think the ICE3 tests will include coupling and uncoupling to / from a Eurostar, so that in the event of either being affected by "the wrong kind of snow" the other (not implying which) can effect a rescue?

If they can't couple together, this could cause problems in future operationally and I'm surprised the French (who seem to be clutching at straws) haven't raised this as an argument.

Isn't it to ensure the radios and signalling are working as they should, and that the train isn't causing any interference. Remember that when the Eurostars first started running in Kent that their powerful inverters were inducing all manner of interference in the signalling causing many trip outs!

Though the Daylight tests are presumably for PR aswell, otherwise they'd have been done at night!

My comment was just a joke, about the train only going a tiny way into the tunnel (like the Eurostar trains did when it snowed).

Both are fitted with Scharfenburg couplers.

Looks like a block marker for the in cab signalling - gives the driver something visual to stop at. Could be wrong though!

Sounds promising.

I laughed when I saw the article stated that Eurostar is a subsidiary of SNCF - the French would sure like it that way!:D

Well seeing as Société Nationale des Chemins de fer français (SNCF) has a 62.5% share in Eurostar Group Ltd, Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Belges (SNCB) has only a 5% share in Eurostar Group Ltd and Eurostar (UK) Ltd has a 32.5% share in Eurostar Group Ltd, is it any wonder why the French behave like spoil brats and why they're kicking and screaming on the new Siemens sets that Eurostar wants to introduce hence why it's no wonder why the French would love nothing better then to have it as a full subsidiary of SNCF!

Still for all their faults, you can't fault them on marketing - the SNCF corporate video kicks ass!

Isn't Eurostar(UK) now Eurostar International and running as a completely separate stand-alone company or have I read something in a business magazine wrongly? (It's not unknown!)

'According to two DB spokesmen who refused to be named the tests included evacuation of two coupled ICE trains and reversing the ventilation system'

I don't know, it's confusing enough for me! The point I was making was SNCF was making so much of a song and dance about the Siemens set, I assume it was down to they having the majority shares in Eurostar.

I'm sure someone else will come along and put us all right!

What time will it be there from/to? I may well call in on the way home from work (from 5.30-6pm onwards).
