A friend has a London Terminals to Loughborough Super Off-Peak Return 26-30 Railcard £45.50 and has travelled the outbound.

Is it possible to upgrade the return to first class in this scenario?

Would it be a case of excess to the Super Off-Peak 1st Return Undiscounted £97.00 ticket at half the difference in fare, therefore £25.75?

Thanks in advance.

I can't confirm your question, but also don't forget the option of weekend first (£12 on EMR flat price) if travel on sat, sun or IIRC a bank holiday. Can only be booked on board however, from train staff.

No, rather more than that. Knowledgebase says:
Either charge the difference between the fare paid and the sum of the appropriate Standard Single for one direction and the appropriate First Single for the other direction. Or, if cheaper, charge the difference up to the appropriate First Return for the journey.
So, in this case it will be £51.50 up to the First Super Off Peak Return.

Can you get a 26-30 discount on a walkup first class ticket?

No but I was expecting that at least Super Off-Peak 1st Return *Undiscounted* £97.00 ticket

Surely that makes it a first class both-ways ticket, is there no allowance to the fact it's just the return portion we want to excess?

It's cheaper to do the latter in this scenario, isn't it?

That's correct - because it's the cheaper option

As bizarre as it is, because single tickets are often punitively expensive, going in one direction in Standard and the other in First is often rather more expensive than just going both ways in First.

That's not actually right though - you would be correct to say it's no cheaper to go one way in standard but this isn't more expensive. And in this case the railcard discount on the standard fare increases the difference.

Oh, I haven't actually looked at the prices in this example at all. I was just generalising on the relative prices, common where where off peak First tickets are available, in response to the question of whether there is any "allowance" over the point.
