Hello all and apologies if this has already been asked but cannot find anything on this topic

I was wondering if there are any Class 60's at all that are in operation/serviceable that do not have the "super 60" upgrade?

Thanks

Having had a scroll through the WNXX fleet status list I can only find 011 and 065 as active but not refurbished

Thank you appreciate that. I wonder if either of them get much work?

I believe 065 is used as a shunter at Toton sometimes and recently as a route learner / traction trainer, I remember it filled in as an emergency replacement for a failed DCR 60 12/18 months ago, there are some photos of 011 on Flickr on the Humber oil tanks last week

Thanks for that appreciate the info. Interesting to hear, shame there’s not more of them about!

Could someone be kind enough to explain what is the "Super 60 Upgrade" please?

I'd suggest you google "Making the Class 60s 'super' again" which was a Rail Magazine article dated 4/9/13, it's a good article going into a fair amount of detail, another excellent port of call is Flickr, look up the DCR locos 028/029/046/055 as there are a number of pictures from inside Toton during their conversions

The whole saga of the 60s seems ridiculous. Was there ever a market for 100 60mph class 5s? Especially as the writing was on the wall for the coal industry (and others) when they were commissioned in the late 80s?

I believe there most certainly was a market for them, when they were ordered they were due to replace more than double that number of older and less capable locos on heavy haulage, the only ridiculous thing was the advent of Burkhardt and his EWS clowns who decided they didn't like them or any other UK built locos

I wouldn't have said the writing was on the wall for the coal industry in the 80s as 20 years later there were still plenty of coal trains running (ok so most were from import terminals but it was still coal)

More rediculous was Keith Heller who decided to scrap nearly every UK built locos and downsize EWS. At least Burkhardt was still keeping a lot of the UK built locos alongside the GM's and was increasing freight and it was still an interesting scene for the trainspotter.

I remember it being after the arrival of Heller when I really started to lose interest.

Strangely enough, Keith Heller was running it as a business, not a funfair featuring geriatric traction...

That’s not to say he got what he did right, of course.

Yeah, the various EWS management teams certainly didn’t get everything right but the fact that nearly 25 years later you can’t buy a brand new 66 so various companies are shipping them in from Europe or building them out of the shell of 56’s speaks volumes. Burkhardt wanted a generic go anywhere SD40-2 type loco for the UK market and in that aim he totally succeeded.
