Why have SWR not operated any class 455s to Reading recently?

...and? It seems unlikely the last one has run there but they don't have booked work to Reading.

And haven’t for many, many years I don’t think? There were regular, even daily substitutions but they were AFAIK still 455s covering diagrams meant to be worked by other fleets..

It was VEPs then Junipers predominantly from mid-90s onward; Desiros from the mid-00s

Getting off topic, but yes CIGs had a main line aura about them in a way VEPs didn't. Always headed for the sole second class compo.

And HAPs were used to strengthen 4 cars to 6 in the shoulders.

Hard to believe I once got to from Ascot to Waterloo in under 34 mins in a VEP. Ascot to Richmond under even time.

Seen a few 455s over the years at Ascot, and I'm hoping to time one before they go.

4 cars were very common
The 455 services to Reading between 1996 and 2002 had to be 4-car as Earley and Winnersh had short platforms. They were only extended when the 458s were about to be introduced. For a while the 1837 from Waterloo to Reading was booked for an 8-car 455 formation and didn't stop at the stations between Wokingham and Reading.

Lately there have no class 455s to reading
There appears to be a pair running to Reading this evening so you appear to have spoken too soon.

formed of 455701 and 455901.

They were substituted for the 1550 Waterloo to Reading as they could not run the Weybridge service they would otherwise have done.

There's been booked 455s to Reading much of the time over the last 2 years, but there hasn't been since December now.
