In light of the GA thread I am just checking I have this right….. reading this post https://www.railforums.co.uk/thread...-of-number-of-tickets-held-mythbuster.198338/ it seems that I can claim for the full journey? We was caught up in the southern WCML fun and games yesterday while trying to get from Nuneaton to West Byfleet and back.

The plan was 13:35 from Nuneaton, in to Euston at 14:50 then according to NRE a hop on the under ground at 14:57 to Vauxhall and then SWT to West Byfleet arriving at 16:03.

what actually happened was a crawl to MKC, then a change to another LNWR which had a crawl south to all shacks and finally arrived into Euston at 17:15 so over an hour after we should have been on West Byfleet, we finally arrived at 18:35.

Coming home we planned to leave West Byfleet at 18:27, back into London at 19:39, then back on a train north at 21:49 and into Nuneaton at 22:57.

For the Nun to Eus leg we had LNWR only super off peak tickets but not linked to any specific train, and then the Euston to West Byfleet leg we had London Zones 1&2 tickets to West Byfleet Off Peak day return tickets.

because we was delayed into getting to West Byfleet that pushed our return trip home back after doing what we needed to do, so we was on the 20:27 from West Byfleet back to Waterloo, then tube over to Euston and it was a case of waiting and seeing, we ended up on an Avanti to Manchester Pic as no LNWR we’re going north of Watford, and even then they didn’t seem to be running. The Avanti was due out at 22:00 so only a few mins behind our original plan, but didn’t actually leave until 22:58 and got into Nuneaton 00:33 (80 mins late and 96 mins down on our original plan)

so my question is am I right in thinking I can claim back for both parts of the journey ie Nun to Eus and Eus to Wby? And for the return leg too as we was late getting on at Wby due to the late arrival? Or just the Eus to Nun on the return?

any help very much appreciated as only ever had to claim delay repay once before and that was nice and easy due to a simple trip A to B and no trains for 2 hours on the return.

No real point claiming twice - you will be entitled to compensation amounting to 100% of your tickets' cost just for the outward journey, as you were delayed by more than 2 hours. You can't claim back more than 100% anymore (in the past you would have been able to make a 'profit' on journeys like yours, where you are heavily delayed on both legs).

As far as I can make out, the first officially "valid" connection between Euston and Waterloo doesn't get you into West Byfleet until 16:21, but as you only arrived there at 18:35, you were still more than 2 hours late so qualify for 100% compensation.

You shouldn't have too many difficulties in terms of holding multiple tickets - they both clearly join up and, in my experience, WMT pay Delay Repay without much fuss on split tickets.

His booked journey was via Vauxhall which has significantly shorter connection times.

I thought it was 100% back for that leg… ie £10 return… outbound delayed by more than 1hr 100% of that leg back so £5? If it’s 100% of the full lot then easy peasy and I’ve miss read it. I wasn’t trying to claim back more than I paid at all, I just wanted to make sure I could
Claim back what I paid the correct way rather than 2 years later some one from LNWR doing a GA and saying I claimed wrong and now Oe them £200 for the privilege

I did wonder why NRE spat out Vauxhall as the connection but guessed it was maybe due to shorter connections. We went back via Waterloo for ease as going back the 20:27 was change at Clapham, and Vauxhall on NRE… but knew it would still be hit and miss at Eus anyway so didn’t see the point in busting a gut and doing multiple changes to save about 2 mins

The minimum connection time from Euston to Vauxhall is 15 (EUS) + 22 (Tube, between 7am and 7pm) + 5 (VXH) = 42 minutes. Therefore the 15:24 from VXH is not a valid connection off the 14:50 EUS arrival, as it only allows 34 mins.

That's for a delay of 60-119 mins - and if you hold a single ticket that's the most you'll get. But if you hold a return ticket, and experience a delay of 120+ mins, you are entitled to 100% of the entire value of the ticket. See LNR's passenger charter:

NRE doesn't always produce itineraries that accurately reflect the minimum connection times. Personally, if my train stopped at Vauxhall and I was heading to Euston, I would probably get off there because it's usually no more than 1-2 mins until the next Victoria line train, and the fact that it's a few minutes sooner than waiting until Waterloo. But there's probably not a lot in it either way.

Apologies.

Trying to recreate it I find that you can only get the desired itinerary by selecting the faster journey crossing London box. I take it that that isn't a valid itinerary, even though NRE has advised it? This ought to be made clearer.

Thanks @Watershed i will be sticking my claim in today, had missed that but on the LNWR site

Just a quick one… anyone done delay repay on LNWR with split ticket? But one ticket as electronic and one as paper? It might be because I’m on the mobile version of the site but it asks if my ticket has a barcode… which one does… the site seems to be only geared up for normal end to end tickets as it also asks for the price of my ticket. Any advice

Assuming both parts were return tickets so that it's a simple matter of adding the two prices together, I would suggest uploading an image containing both tickets (either by using image manipulation software to combine two separate images, or by taking a picture of the two tickets placed next to each other - one of which being a printout or displayed on a screen), and enter the ticket type and number from one of the tickets (the more expensive one, say) but give the price as the total for both tickets. This way, the automatically calculated refund will be the correct value, and any human intervening would see the picture of the two tickets and be able to check that the sum is correct. I don't think they actually check the ticket number against any database of tickets sold, but simply use it to track if multiple claims are made against the same ticket, and I think the question about whether the ticket has a barcode is just so that the form knows whether to ask for the barcode number or for the paper ticket number.

If the claim were more complicated, such as if you had two singles instead of a return for one part (so that you would have to put in claims for both out and return to get the full amount back), then the typical advice given on this forum is to not use the online claim form but instead send an email to customer services with an explanation, including images of all tickets and all the information the form usually asks for.

I ended up sending them a message via Facebook, thinking it would take ages for a reply…. 5 mins later what I was thinking of doing was confirmed as correct.

the gist was as you said add the 2 returns together for the total price and when it asks for the ticket to be uploaded have one photo / pdf off all the tickets, and where on the form it asks for the ticket number just quote the first one.

so let’s see what happens, they don’t make it that simple when using multiple tickets that’s for sure! And none of the FAQ covers it, so wonder how many normal people don’t claim for the full amount they are allowed?

I've not had any issues (at least not recently).

I usually use e-tickets from Trainsplit (where available) so it's just a matter of uploading the pre-existing PDF (the PDF will contain one page for each ticket, but it's just one PDF for the entire journey, which is super easy).

Where e-tickets are not available (or where I need to make two separate transactions to obtain the tickets I need) then I simply take a photo of all the relevant tickets and upload that.

For the value, as they said it's a matter of adding up the total cost of the tickets.

There will always be some edge cases but for the most part, using multiple tickets is no harder than using a through ticket.

Train split etc couldn’t cope with our trip for some reason, had to work it out ourselves… hopefully all sorted now and I know for future claims what to do too now
