I'm just having a poke around trying to plan a journey and using one of the above would seem to be the best value way of making the journey I'm planning but I note that since LNER did away with returns on this route they've also added a via Peterborough restriction. Usually this wouldn't be a massive issue as I'm sure the overwhelming majority of passengers would be happy using an LNER service rather than something more exotic like EMR via the MML. But with there being no LNER service from London or Peterborough I'm wondering if any extra validity has been granted for that weekend to allow passengers to travel on EMR via Sheffield instead? If not then it doesn't appear that there's any easy way of doing this journey on a flexible ticket!

If you're doing a return then I'd get a return from Manors which is routed Any Permitted and is the same price.

This is exactly the kind of issue that shows why they shouldn't have been allowed to add a 'via Peterborough' restriction to those half-price singles.

On that weekend there are no Grantham-Peterborough trains, and LNER passengers are advised to change at Grantham for a bus to Corby. Yet if you search for Newcastle to London on LNER's website, you're simply told there are no trains at all.

I imagine this is because the fastest results (via Sheffield) are barred by the 'via Peterborough' route of the flexible fare, and there are no through Advances for XC & EMR.

You have to know that you need to enter 'via Corby' for any results to appear. Even if this is intentional to put people off travelling, surely a message warning people 'there are no direct trains, please do not travel...' would be more helpful?

In your particular circumstance, if you don't want a return, a ticket to Edinburgh is probably your best option. Here the walkup tickets are routed via York, and a Super Off-Peak Single is only £3 more than to Newcastle.

If we're being charitable, there is a lot of room for improvement on the customer experience for this particular set of engineering works!

We're aware and shouting at the people who may be able to fix it.

I would but on one leg I'm looking at doing something funky for which a straight up return wouldn't work sadly :(

Oh that's an excellent shout! I don't know why but it didn't even cross my mind to check that option! Thanks :)

That's only if you go to the Travel Information section of the website, not if you go straight to the journey planner (as most people would).
