Hi,

I am currently working in film production and we are looking to source 90 x train seats.

We are going to be re-upholstering them so the condition is not vital however they all need to be the same style chair.

If anyone has any contacts or advice on who would be best to talk to for this scale, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance :)

Holly

Thank you, I have had a read and contacted CF BOOTH and DFT. I was just wondering if anything had surfaced more recently especially given the amount we need.

Agree with the above. Booths of Rotherham will be your best bet. Could also try EMR as an alternative.

Not sure of your timescales, but I think SWR were going to take seats from 442s and put them in their class 458s. Presumably the existing seats in the 458s might be available.

Another thought is lots of withdrawn electric commuter trains have been taken to a scrapyard in Newport, South Wales. (Sorry, dont know scrapyard name, but hopefully somebody does) Not sure if they can sell you seats.

Great thank you!

Might be worth trying Arlington Fleet Services in Eastleigh.

Thank you

Sims Newport
Just spoke with Sims, apparently, its a company policy that they don't sell? But thank you anyway

Or you could try the three main rolling stock leasing companies, Angel, Eversholt and Porterbrook.

Yep there’s several like that, hence the suggestion to try Booths.

Newport have limited space on their site, hence why they’re so quick to process scrap.

Not a chance. Anything that's already been sent there is long gone, and they work so quickly they have no interest in removing bits.
Quite. I’m not sure why Sims at Newport keeps being suggested in response to these questions when we know full well it’s pointless asking as we know what the answer will be.

What about trying some of the heritage railway lines? They may spares they're willing to sell. Aren't The 125 Group re-fitting some HST carriages with their original seats in place of the items that were fitted when these were refurbished?

Also, what era is the film set in?

Isn't it possible that some of the older seats don't meet current fire regs, and so can't be legally sold, just as you can't sell your granny's old sofa when you're clearing her house.

Hi Holly - you might want to clarify what time period / era the film is set in maybe, in case other advice only directs you to seats from modern trains.

For example - I recall the complete double take I did when at the cinema watching 'Dunkirk', and the soldiers get back to UK and are filmed travelling on a train complete with exactly the same upholstery / interior as I commuted on in the early 1980s... for a short moment I genuinely thought the film director wanted to end the film with a transition to a different period of time...

Good luck with your search.

almost certainly not the case.

Fire compliance is a railway standard and only needed when the fittings are to be installed on rolling stock.

Not sure where you’ve heard that as nothing has been mentioned on that front. Besides they only have one vehicle with “new” seats.

Indeed - TGS 44000 which retains it's (comfortable!) Grammer IC3000s. The rest of the rake is made up with IC70s being ex MML / EMT / EMR. The only pres Mk3 currently undergoing re-seating is former prototype vehicle 42002 (42356) which is owned privately by a member** but may find use with the group one day.

Either way, the seats from that vehicle are now also long gone as well.

** Details of this can be found on Facebook as Project HST-P / Northumbria Rail (They are currently fund-raising so if anyone would be happy to chip in!)

We've tried getting items off vehicles before scrapping from Newport and they are pretty much a closed shop. Once rail vehicles are inside their gates there aint no rail vehicles (or components from them) getting out!
