Suggestions for the cheapest flexible ticket for this journey, please (there seem to be no Advances available): out Oxford-Dorchester (either station) on a Friday (middle of the day) and back Honiton-Oxford about a week later.

What's the best you've come up with so far?

I was wondering about something along these lines?

Oxford-Maiden Newton *
59.10 Super Offpeak Return ( Route: Not Via London )

Maiden Newton–Dorchester West
4.10 Offpeak Single

Honiton-Yeovil Junction
14.40 Offpeak Day Single ( there's a slightly cheaper Super Offpeak - weekends only )

Total
77.60 ( assuming walk if necessary between Yeovil Junction and Pen Mill )

(* effectively valid via Newbury (or Melksham) but not via Bath nor Basingstoke)

If you bought a ticket from Bicester Village, rather than Oxford, to Maiden Newton, you could use it to go between Oxford and Dorchester via Basingstoke and Bournemouth, and wouldn't need a separate Dorchester single.

For the return leg, a "via Yeovil" single from Honiton to Castle Cary would work.

These changes would reduce the overall cost to £71.60.

This ticket: https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=BIT&dest=MDN&rte=700&tkt=SSR ?

Could you explain how that works for the outward journey?

Its valid to go via Dorchester (I assume) ...

Hopefully it is valid but I'm just not seeing how it works. Probably I'm missing something.

Weymouth Group fails the fares check as a destination routeing point from both origin routeing points ( Oxford and Princess Risborough* ) so the only mapped routes are to Castle Cary (map RB from Oxford) and none of those pass through Dorchester. (* PRR doesn't seem helpful anyway as the routes from there pass through London and it's a route:Not Via London ticket).

The logic I followed was:

Bicester Village (BIT) is not a routeing point.
Its nearest routeing points are: Princes Risborough (PRR) and Oxford (OXF)
Maiden Newton (MDN) is not a routeing point.
Its nearest routeing points are: Dorchester South (DCH), Dorchester West (DCW), Upwey (UPW), Weymouth (WEY) and Castle Cary (CLC)

BIT to MDN route NOT VIA LONDON SOS cost 2500
BIT to MDN route ANY PERMITTED SOS cost 3500

OXF to MDN route NOT VIA LONDON SOS cost 2500

2500 <= 2500, so Oxford is a valid routeing point.

DCW to BIT route VIA WESTBURY SOS cost 2570
DCW to BIT route VIA BASINGSTOKE CDS cost 2740
DCW to BIT route VIA BASINGSTOKE SDS cost 2950
DCW to BIT route ANY PERMITTED CDS cost 3610
DCW to BIT route ANY PERMITTED SDS cost 4040

According to the routeing guide (page F4), all fare comparisons must be made using the same ticket type. There's only one SOS in the above list. It has a different route to either Bicester-Maiden Newton routes. The routeing guide says nothing about the significance of route codes in the NFM64 data, so I choose to compare it with the ANY PERMITTED through fare.

2570 <= 3500, so Dochester West is a valid routeing point.

That said, nre.co.uk* didn't show this as being a valid route when I tried it a few minutes ago, so you may prefer to use a different ticket.

Ah OK - if Weymouth Group does pass the fares check than that makes sense; rp_calc shows Weymouth Group as a fail (but we know rp_calc isn't always perfect.)

BIT to MDN route NOT VIA LONDON SOS cost 2500
BIT to MDN route ANY PERMITTED SOS cost 3500

DCW to BIT route VIA WESTBURY SOS cost 2570

2570 <= 3500, so Dorchester West is a valid routeing point.
I suspect that NRE uses the NOT VIA LONDON fare and calculates 2570 >= 2500 making DCW invalid. That seems a more reasonable comparison to me than the Any Permitted.
