Not sure whether this belongs under Traction & Rolling Stock, Railway History & Nostalgia or International Transport, but can anyone think of any examples of types of train, present or past, where the unit or vehicle number isn't shown anywhere immediately obvious and is only displayed inside the vehicle or in some other less obvious place?
This can include examples from the UK or abroad, and can also include trams/light rail vehicles and underground/metro/subway vehicles.
Two obvious examples from the present day UK rail network:
The Class 220 and 221 Voyagers have their unit numbers right at the bottom of the bodyside, next to the cab front.
The Grand Central 180s don't appear to display the actual unit number anywhere, only the individual car numbers (and the name if the unit has one).
And two from elsewhere:
The Irish Rail Mark 3 (and Mark 2?) coaches had their numbers on the coach ends next to the gangway connections, rather than on the bodyside.
I also seem to recall that some of the Netherlands Railways Mat'54 (a.k.a. "Hondekop" or "Dog's Head") and Mat'64 (a.k.a. "Plan T" and "Plan V") EMUs only had their unit numbers displayed inside the train. Some of them did have their unit numbers on the bodyside (near the cab ends as I recall) but I certainly seem to remember seeing some where it was only shown inside each vehicle.
