Hi,

I am starting to get really worried.

I have booked advanced twin sleepers for the 11th August 2021 so I can return to London from a summer holiday in Lands End with my 16 yr old daughter to collect her GCSE's in person and confirm sixth form places (she is still undecided between a couple of local schools/ A level choices). The plan was to then get an afternoon train back the same day to rejoin the family holiday in Lands End that evening. When we booked the holiday we forgot about results day...

Now GWR have decided to not sell advance tickets for that week and I can not buy tickets on day trains without reservations which aren't available. The singles are crazily expensive in any case. We don't want to get a sleeper back and lose another night of holiday.

Are GWR likely to release advance tickets at some point and I should just keep watching the site, or do I need to stump up a couple of hundred for a non-reserved single to Exeter from Waterloo and ask the wife to collect us by car (probably worst option)? Other crazy option would be car hire for return journey... I can't face a coach.

Hopefully I am just being impatient and advanced tickets are going to be released.

Any assistance/ thoughts gratefully received.

I notice for the previous Thursday that Advance singles cost a mere £1 less than the Super Offpeak single (which is being advertised for 12 Aug.)
I noticed something about it being the start of Boardmasters.
A 2Together or F&F railcard would save you money on that one trip.

It may take longer, but have you tried booking from Exeter to Waterloo ? It might work out cheaper going that way.

Thanks. I hadn't noticed boardmasters previously. None of the 12 August tickets are on sale though as they all require reservations which aren't available yet (although I hope they haven't sold out).

Since it's 2021 not 1986, unless one of your options is joining an Amish community I would imagine using electronic means to both get results and apply for college would save an awful lot of hassle.

If only. Having the stress of emailing schools and not getting responses in time and then not sure where we are for the duration of the holiday would do my nut in. Am just about to book a seat in the sleeper for the return journey that night. Will give us time to sort everything out and then get back and "only" costs £69 for the return journey. At least gives me an excuse to travel on the night train.

Edit: Advanced together tickets booked for seats on the sleeper to return. Thanks all for the advice.

What journey are you looking at?

i.e. from, to, date, times?
