The ticket office was again closed on Manchester Piccadilly, so apart from buying a return to Crewe from the ticket machines on the station, no one could work out how to buy a West Midland Day Rover ticket, so I was told to see the train manager on the 05.11.

I caught up with someone who said he was the train manager and he told me to jump on the train and buy one in Birmingham, so I jumped on the train.

Just to be on the safe side I also jumped out at Crewe to try and buy one, but that ticket office was also closed, so I got back on the same train and decided to ride through to Birmingham New Street, shortly after leaving Crewe however the ticket inspector came along and I explained the situation and told her that the train manager said he couldn’t issue a West Midland day rover ticket and told me buy one in Birmingham.

She however told me she was the train manager and that the guy who said he was the train manager was actually an assessor?

She also said she could issue a ticket, (a West Midland day rover), but went on to say that they are not supposed to discount a railcard when you buy a ticket on the train, but she did sell me one and with the full discount at £19, which was fine, but I don’t think the information she gave me was correct.

Not everyone can buy tickets on line, some older people simply wouldn’t know how to do it and secondly how can you predict a ticket office will be closed when its listed as opening at 04.30?

So, where did you eventually buy your West Midlands Day Ranger ticket, assuming that you did, and did you have to pay the full £28-80, or the railcard discounted price of £19-00?

If you are unable to purchase the ticket you require then you may board the train and purchase the ticket at the earliest opportunity, without penalty. The earliest opportunity might be onboard the train, at any interchange station (if there is sufficient time), or at your destination. You are not required to delay your journey in these circumstances.

Railcard discounts are allowed for tickets purchased onboard in these circumstances. Some train companies have a policy of not selling tickets with railcard discounts (or sell off peak tickets at all) onboard if you board the train where ticket purchasing facilities do exist, but they cannot implement this if you are unable to purchase the ticket you require before your journey starts.

You can actually buy a West Midlands Day Ranger from the ticket machines at Crewe. [ Though if the station is staffed it will take you several minutes to reach them !]

Increasingly this seems to fail and you end up buying a point to point ticket and then getting a refund afterwards but as this is the case there is always a risk of a guard referring for prosecution. It seems this was a positive outcome unless I’ve misunderstood so that is reassuring.

Just realised I gave incorrect information. The ticket machines at Crwewe WILL sell you a WM Day Ranger, but NOT if you want to apply a railcard discount to it. [ There is a button to press but it simply doesn't work ]

As I may be buying a WM Day Ranger from Crewe in the not too distant future, is it easy to find the ticket on the TVMs?

From what I remember, there’s a Rovers and Rangers button on the ticket machines. Although I can’t remember actual rovers being available on the TVMs, only the local day tickets such as the Greater Manchester Day Savers at Piccadilly.

I'd have been tempted to go and find the assessor and inform them of this erroneous claim.

That's correct. It's either on the Start menu of one of the options after you have pressed "Buy". It is the only Ranger ticket available on the machine - but you still have to select the button.

The question I would like to ask, is the assessor suppose to be assessing the TM in doing all of her duties. If so why was he/she not following her around on ticket checking duties' as well as all of the other duties?

There will be too many variables to answer that. That said you will generally find that assessments are predominantly restricted to safety critical & operational matters.
