I shall be travelling up to Newcastle towards the end of this month and would be grateful of any tips and advice. Journey details are as follows.

Outward Day 1: 24 Jun
Depart Birmingham New Street
Arrive Sheffield circa 4pm/5pm

Depart Sheffield circa 9pm/10pm
Arrive York

[overnight hotel in York]

Outward Day 2: 25 Jun
Depart York (no particular time needed - might spend a day looking around)
Arrive Newcastle - early evening at the latest

[It is possible that we might go somewhere for a day trip on the Sat/Sun so any suggestions fir things to do or rovers most welcome.]

Return: no fixed day
Anything between 27 and 29 Jun depending on price

Depart Newcastle
Arrive Birmingham New Street

Latest return time to Birmingham on Tuesday 29 Jun would be circa 4pm/5pm. Otherwise, any time is fine.

I am happy to change trains if this helps to bring the price down. Similarly, happy to take longer routes and perhaps do something en route whilst travelling back.

I hold a 26-30 railcard so the price to beat is a Birmingham to Newcastle Off Peak Return [SVR] priced £82.35

No objection to using more obscure ‘loophole’ tickets, but please be careful not to post such things publicly on this thread!

As a starter for ten: £69.25

Birmingham to Derby SVR £13.00
Derby to Sheffield SVR £15.70
Sheffield to York SHR* £18.40
York to Newcastle SVR+ £22.15

* Anytime Short Return
+ TPE only

You can make a very small saving by splitting Derby-York at Chesterfield instead of Sheffield.

12.90 SVR Derby-Chesterfield
20.05 SVR Chesterfield-York (route:via Sheffield)

Total £68.10

Also, if you're planning other journeys, it could be worth considering the 4 in 8 Day freedom of NE Rover @ £72.60 ( total £101.30 including £28.70 for Birmingham-Sheffield)

It should be noted that not all XC services call at Chesterfield.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

In typical fashion, plans have been up-ended! Now going across to Manchester before heading up to Newcastle.

New draft itinerary with potential tickets (all with 26-30 discount):

Thurs 24 June
Birmingham New Street [BHM] to Sheffield [SHF]
Afternoon and evening in Sheffield
SHF to Leeds [LDS]

I already know what ticket I’ll be using for the BHM to SHF to LDS legs.

LDS to York [YRK]
Using outward portion of LDS to YRK SVR
£13.30

Stay in York overnight

Fri 25 June
Daytime in York

YRK to Manchester Victoria [MCV]
Using outward portion of YRK to MCV SVR
£21.25

Sat 26 June
No travel

Sun 27 June
MCV to Newcastle [NCL]
Using return portion of YRK to MCV SCR
And outward portion of YRK to NCL SVR TPE only
£22.15

Mon 28 June orTues 29 June
NCL to BHM
Using return portion of YRK to NCL SVR
And return portion of YRK to LDS SVR

I already have a ticket to cover me from LDS to BHM.
