Hi all, hopefully not a dumb question. I'm a trainee driver and was being quizzed by my DI on the names of the crossings on the up Helensburgh line. The second one is Ardmore East AHB. He asked if I was sure and he said we'll have a look as we drive past. It actually says Ardmore East REB crossing. He has no idea what that means and after searching t'internet high and low neither do I. He said when getting passed out tell my DTM it's an AHB crossing as everyone he knows says that. So what does the REB mean?

REB stands for Relocatable Equipment Building, so the name you saw is for the building rather than the crossing.

Shwam3 is correct. The REB is the 'temporary' building holding the crossing equipment. The crossing type will be AHB (or in the general case almost any other).

It does seem odd that many of these portable units have name plates which incorporate “REB” now it’s been mentioned. Is it a good idea, if people are reading it as part of the place?

To add to the earlier replies, it is an AHB, strictly an AHBC-X, the “X” indicating that it can be used in the ‘wrong’ direction during modified working at reduced speed (in this case 40mph) without the need for a crossing attendant. You might get ‘extra points’ for saying that. Or, you might not!

Good luck with passing out.

Likely the ‘name’ has been copied from the signalling diagrams, where REB is included so that it is clear that it is not a normal lineside location cupboard (‘loc’).

There were signal boxes at both Ardmore East and Ardmore West. Both dated from WW2 as there were extensive naval sidings at the location. Ardmore West closed some time in I think the early 1970s and Ardmore East at a later date.
