Hi all,

Apologies if this has been asked before. I did search, but couldn't find anything.

I'm after a map of the UK showing information on which signalling system (s) is/are in operation on a particular section of railway.

I don't mean things like tracksy that go down to the level of individual tracks and signals.

openrailwaymap has a signalling overlay layer but it's nowhere near complete for the UK.

Any help would be appreciated!

The only book I can think of is the Signalling Atlas and signal box directory by Peter Kay and David Allen published by the signalling record society. This will tell you everything you need to know. The only problem is it is well out of date but a updated version should be available in the near future.

I've been wanting to create one for a while similar to my other maps. If you'd like I can start it earlier and shouldn't take long.

The 'protection systems' listed on the openrailwaymap legend are mostly irrelevant to Britain. ETCS exists on a couple of lines, but that's it. If you want to be consistent and categorise lines according to 'protection system', then every mainline passenger line in the UK not fitted with ETCS uses AWS & TPWS (with ATP on the Great Western Main Line and Chiltern Main Line).

On the other hand, you might want to use the signalling layer in Britain to show the method of working, rather than protection system. These methods of working would include Track Circuit Block, Absolute Block, Electric Token Block, Tokenless Block, No Signaller Token Remote, One Train Working and Radio Electronic Token Block. This information can be found in the Sectional Appendix PDF documents.

Thanks all. Looking closer at that openrailwaymap site I see that it is definitely focussed on the German railway.

I wouldn't want you do this just for my benefit, and I don't really have the time or knowledge to be any help. Having said that, if you were going to do it anyway, I (and presumably a lot of other people) would be grateful!

It would be ideal (data licenses permitting) to contribute this information to openrailwaymap directly.

I've started to add the data. Shouldn't take long to complete the whole UK. It'll be an interactive map similar to my electrification map so you'll be able to zoom in and out.

Awesome! How are you defining the categories, out of curiosity?

Any requests of locations on the network you'd like to see first?

Same as they are on NESA. I don't have the data to map the types of signals i.e. semaphore, LED, etc.
  • TCB
  • AB
  • TB
  • OTNS
  • RETB
  • etc.
You'll have a bit of bother completing the whole UK if you haven't even got any railways to label in Northern Ireland ;)
I keep forgetting that I mean Great Britain! :D

This is a prototype of what I've done so far.

Hope this helps ignore dates - they are up to date

Thank you for those, I wonder if your colleagues on the ECML/MML have prepared similar documents between London and Peterborough/Bedford/Cambridge?
