Footbridge at Debden.

Just seen pic; of the new footbridge at Debden Central line and am encouraged to see that as far as I can tell ,it seems to have clearance for full-size stock. This is an unusually forward-looking step for these days- anything to do with the use of a surface- gauge Tmm7 track vehicle which had to be bought in by road to Hainault?

That part of the line and station was built by the Great Eastern Railway running full size steam trains. It was taken over by London Transport in 1949. The bridge is quite old so will assume it dates back to BR days

Ignore me! Didn't know the station was going step free and got a new bridge

Debden station on the Central line goes step-free

Debden tube station has become the latest to get step-free access with the opening of a new footbridge with lifts linking the two platforms.

I would say that it was easier to install a standard type and size of an approved, partly prefabricated footbridge with lifts such as is being installed at many NR stations. Engneering a structure that is three foot lower just because the trains running under it have a smaller loading gauge would probably cost a lot more in total. Of course there's marginally more electricity going to be used raising the lifts to that extra height, but some of that can be reclaimed by regen and feeding it back into the grid.
