We are East Coast Trains Limited (ECTL), a brand-new transformational, innovative, and digital open access train company who will provide regular, cost effective, 100% electric travel across iconic cities including London, Newcastle, and Edinburgh from Oct 2021. We will be an alternative to flying that is cheaper, kinder to the environment and just as time effective as taking a domestic flight.

Our people are our key to success. We need an engaged, empowered, multiskilled and flexible family of colleagues who live and breathe the ECTL values of:

  • Fresh thinking and Innovation to delight customers
  • Service performance and excellence in everything we do
  • Challenging and disrupting industry norms
  • Collaborative and consistent in what we do
  • Lean and agile in our approach
  • Providing a healthier, safer, and environmentally sustainable approach to everything we do

At ECTL we value diversity. We are a progressive and inclusive one family employer. All our colleagues have a voice and are supported to be their authentic selves at work. There will be no demarcation of roles and everyone will play a part in the decision making of the company.

Our commitment is that we will provide great value services, direct to city centres, whilst also building relationships with local communities and stakeholders along the route. Our service will be unlike other rail operators, we will endeavour to elevate service to rival airlines and become the primary choice for travel. Colleagues will actively look for ways to live and breathe our values to help our customer travel well, beyond expectations

Safety critical with dispatch competency. Essentially a conductor. Pretty average salary.
Very average when you also have cleaning duties factored in. Sounds to me like ECTL will want alot from the role.

There's also lodging in the role which can be quite anti-social. It might be 30K basic, with some anti-social hours top up.

They've already recruited twice for drivers so it would seem that's not going too well for them.

Looking at the job advert it seems like a quick start. Assessments in two weeks with a medical between 28th July and 4th August.

I could barely cope with reading that, must be the most "Management Bullsh*t Bingo" in one ad I've ever seen for the railway industry

When I got to customer touch points I had to swallow a bit of sick.

Just as well you're not applying then. You don't have to comment like that, you could just say nothing at all and let those who are genuiney interested ask questions.

I am already a high performing customer touchpoint attendee, ambassador and provider of safe environments, with a proven track record for excellence and "going the extra mile", even "cleaning as you go". A move to Newcastle isn't appealing however, though I do find keeping an eye on what is going on in the industry is important and ECTL are certainly looking to be a bit of a different beast.

I was merely expressing some frustration at the ludicrous way job adverts are written nowadays - the amount of insane flowery language thrown in to say very little is bonkers.

Is this a surprise? At approximately £576 / week gross the salary is higher than median weekly pay, which is £534. They're hardly going to be paying that sort of rate for a relatively unproductive worker.

I'm sure someone on this forum had gone for an interview for Driver (Customer Enterprising Vehicle Movement Initiator) and they'd said that lodging would be on 2 out of 3 shifts. That's quite a bit of time away from home.

Agreed!

"Elevate services to rival airlines"? <smirk>

I wonder have they ever flown Ryanair?

Did you do the assessment in Newcastle and is it the interview on teams you've got to
From what I've heard through the grapevine -

Assessment day in Newcastle, if successful at the assessment day you're invited to a culture interview with the MD of ECTL on Microsoft Teams.

I'm sure it would be a great job if you're looking to get on to the railway. Same with the driving.

Can't say its going to be fantastic if you compare it to other TOCs, mind you.

Personally, even if I was someone looking to get onto the railway, I’d probably think twice about this unless I was currently without work. There must be a non negligible chance of OA companies going bust and/or scaling back their workforce, and as a new employee you have very little protection for the first two years.

Much safer to get on with a traditional toc. There are generally far more opportunities available simply because established TOCs are so much larger than these operations.

I'd say that's poor advice given the amount of people on here telling us how long it took to even get past the first stage. Not to mention the fact that GBR is no doubt going to need to find some 'resource savings' in the coming decade so the government can claim newfound levels of efficiency.

If you can get past the first stage with an OA you should be able to do so with a TOC. As I’ve pointed out there are more job opportunities available with a TOC, so the numbers are less stacked against you for TOC jobs.

You might consider it poor advice, but I’ve worked for two TOCs and I don’t know a single driver who had left for OA. The reasons why are obvious in the current climate. We can’t all be wrong…

Not everyone wants to work for a TOC, you're right you CAN'T say its going to be fantastic because you dont know anything about them. No one other than the handful working for them can comment here.

This mighty TOC vs OAO underdog attitude is getting really boring.

Compare this to airline, Virgin and BA being the mighty TOC and Jet2/Easyjet being the underdog... I can tell you now which ones (in my opinion) are better to work for now, and its certainly not the traditional companies.

Hull and East Coast trains are part of First, there are plenty of opportunities if you want to move around you dont just have to stay within the same TOC to do it.
Also both Hull and. GC have been going for some time now, 20yrs for HT and around 14yrs for GC.. I'd say theyre fairly secure, we need to get away from thinking just because you're franchised you're safer.

As I’ve pointed out there are more job opportunities available with a TOC, so the numbers are less stacked against you for TOC jobs.

Not quite right in this case, being an new company there is ZERO people already doing the job at the minute so there will be a big intake over several courses, and of course being a smaller fairly unheard of company the numbers applying are probably less than the large numbers applying for a handful of positions with say LNER.

Probably best we stop being negative about ECT and come back in a year and see how they're getting on.
