(Not sure if there is already a thread on this, couldn't find one)
The Rail Delivery Group is going to run a competition with the grand prizes being 12 all line passes (The purple ones issued to some staff) to the very lucky winners, there are also smaller prizes up for grabs at events in stations. Entry appears to be free and starts from the 19th (backontrack.nationalrail.co.uk/#/competition - link to the competition entry page on the national rail website).
To celebrate the easing of restrictions, and to encourage people to use up their untaken annual leave, we’re giving 12 lucky people the chance to win a year’s free rail travel.
If you won this, where would you go on your first trip? All in all sounds like very exciting stuff!

Odds of actually winning will be very remote, but worth a shot. No doubt it will be won by those serial competition entering people, probably by someone who might have taken a train every few months to the nearest town/city for some shopping.

Reading the T&Cs the box about "why you should win" is just for PR spin for any winners.

It appears there are 12 prizes, one being drawn every week. Odds of winning are very remote (naturally) but worth a shot.

Although the chances are of course remote, it's free entry so you don't lose anything either way, certainly worth a punt. I won't however be entering as I have priv rate and would seem selfish to reduce others chances of winning when I don't really need it myself (although it would be nice:lol:)

I would use it to take short haul services. For example, as I live in Bournemouth, I would use it mainly to travel to Branksome, Christchurch, Poole, Southampton, Lymington, or Salisbury - Bristol or Cardiff, or maybe to go to London occasionally, and to travel to work if it is near a train station.

What are they going to do with all the names and addresses they receive? Will you find yourself deluged with advertising spam or post if you don’t manage to put exactly the right combination of ticks on the the form? Unless you read every box carefully you risk ticking one that allows them to send you advertising while thinking that it is a refusal, or leaving one unticked that allows them to do the same.

Looking at the form, is this going to be a completely random draw, or will the winners be based on who can come up with the biggest sob story?

Reading the T&C's it suggests that it will be randomly drawn.

Can't imagine someone will physically read the entries, probably some software will filter out those entries with nothing entered in that box.

Put "I would like to win a years free travel so I no longer have to try and navigate the Byzantine fare system of the British railway network". See if they include that in their publicity!

Do early entries get re-entered into each successive week's draw (so making it sensible to make your one permitted entry right at the start) or just in the week of entry (in which case it would pay to wait for a week when you reckon the initial enthusiasm will have died down, to improve the odds)?

Whole host of terms and conditions, including the following...

10. Only one entry is allowed per person. Duplicate entries or entries submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

13. One winner will be selected every Friday each week for 12 weeks, starting on Friday 23rd July with the last winner being selected on Friday 8th October.

I've now tried twice to enter, errors on both tries, so I've given up trying to enter. Never mind, I'm sure someone will win it that doesn't really want it!

The OP said it starts from the 19th (i.e. tomorrow) though the form doesn't actually say so!

Is there such a ticket (for retail) as an ‘All Lines Pass valid for 12 months’, or will they be coding something bespoke?

Could be fun on the barrier line at Laindon on a wet afternoon in February, once the magnetic stripe stops working!

I'm reading it as being a single pool of entries, from which 12 are drawn to be winners.

Such tickets already exist and are issued directly by RDG as Smartcards so should work everywhere, assuming the gateline has been programmed appropriately.

Thanks. Can an ordinary punter buy one? I thought the 14-day All Line Rover was the longest ‘travel anywhere’ ticket retailed, although there are some high mileage point-to-point annual season tickets available.

No. For a few years after privatisation a price was maintained for an 'All Stations' season ticket but it cost well over £10,000 and no-one bought it so it was dropped....

Nope. They're only issued to Railway Chaplains, the Chair of the Heritage Railway Association and the like, and for special occasions like this.

But not valid on Merseyrail!

The other exclusions are less surprising (full list : Eurostar, Hull, Grand Central, Merseyrail, Tyne and Wear Metro, Light Rail and Tramway Systems, Heritage, Sleeper or Charter train services, Glasgow Underground, Docklands Light Railway, London Underground.)

Exclusion of the sleepers is a bit of a surprise - and a spanner in the works!

I have entered. The way the wording was described as who would you nominate suggested you should nominate someone else. I assume you can enter yourself?

Not sure how that ties in with this...

  1. The prize is non-transferable and must not be sold, changed or exchanged for money.
It was me that agreed to the T & Cs ....
