Can anyone tell me if current interviews for Trainee Train Conductor still include the group assessment and interviews in a face-to-face setting? Or are they now taking place online due to COVID?

I had my interview via Microsoft teams last week and was told there was no assessment day due to covid, I was told I was successful and have my medical this coming Tuesday, providing I pass the medical I have a start date of July 12th. My application was for Cardiff.

Good evening, dont know if you are anyone can give some advise. I also applied for the Trainee train drivers jobs in Cardiff and received the attached email advising I have been shortlisted and the are in the process of allocating an assessment centre. I notice
from your post currently no assessments are taking place. Did you have the same email? if so did you proceed straight to interview stage?

Hi, I applied for the conductor not the driver and there was no assessment day stage for me, I can only assume the driver position still has the assessments, well done on getting shortlisted, fantastic.

Hey Mamfa did you start your course after? I’m currently in the talent pool for the Rhymney depot trainee conductor been waiting since April just wondering if you got any conductors for Rhymney in your course and if you’ve heard anything regarding other courses taking place. Any info would be great thanks.

When I applied roughly two years ago I applied directly with TfW. I did an online SCAAT, then validated the results in Cardiff, and then it was straight to group assessment and interview on the same day.
This time round - via Acorn - it’s been the online SCAAT, online RAAT, and I have the online TCT (Ticket Checking Test) to complete by July 20th. I presume if I pass that it’ll be interview

Weird, not really consistent. I'm straight to teams interview. Wasn't via acorn, direct to TFW

I’m in the same position as Zontar going from posts on other threads and it’s confused me too, seeing other posts about having various assessments before getting to interviews but on this occasion it’s just been the SCAAT test and then interviews (online, via teams too).

The only explanation I can think of is that it’s because of covid, things are just being worked differently?

Well maybe we just been lucky and got a shorter route. Time will tell I'm sure

Hi Rj89,
Apologies for the late reply, it’s been a manic week.
Yes, I started my training g course on Monday, I still can’t quite believe it.
We’re all Cardiff Valleys in this course, the trainer has mentioned other courses starting but not what areas, I don’t know any more than that I’m sorry.
Hopefully it won’t be too long until your start date. Good luck.

Hi Zontar,
Apologies for the delayed reply. Same as you, I did SCAAT and then an interview via teams, no other tests. After interview I had a medical and then a criminal records check and identity / right to work check.

Congratulations. Is there any prep you’d recommend for the TCT or are they quick maths type questions?

thanks for the reply mamfa maybe they are doing all the depots on separate courses! how are you finding it so far? Hope it’s going well! I’ve had info that it’s quite intense to begin with. I can’t wait to start my course if you happen to hear any info please drop a message on the group.

Thanks! It’s concentration and attention to detail more than anything, no maths involved just times etc. When are you doing it?
I’ll do it tomorrow morning (20th) when my son is in nursery and my head is fresh. I have him all day today and once he’s asleep my head will most probably be frazzled. :)

The courses for South Wales are done in Cardiff and the courses for N Wales and English depots are done in Chester.
All training centres are very busy and there's quite a few trainees at various stages of training at this time.

I think I was about the same cos I remember thinking I was halfway, how did you find it?
I think I did OK. Was careful to make sure I wasn’t caught out on the direction the train was going. The deadline has passed so I’ll be refreshing my emails every five minutes or so today. :)

I got the unsuccessful email from TfW. No feedback. Bit gutted obviously as it seems some folks have reached interview without doing the RAAT and TCT but there we go.
Good luck everyone…
Does seem rather unfair, I do feel for you. All I can say is that you definitely have the right skillset to have got this far so keep going. Any other tocs in your area?

Good afternoon everyone,

I have been invited to an interview with Transport for Wales for the trainee train conductor role via MS Teams early next month.

Can anyone shed some light on what the interview will involve? Is it similar to MMI or DMI?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.
