I know a thread was made last year about 43050/060,
But seeing as 5 MTU engined PC's have now moved into the COTS pool i was wondering if anyone could spread some light on the acquisition and plans for them.
Apparently some of the ones at Burton will be going to Kidderminster and the SVR for testing soon I believe, any info?
Many Thanks
Jack

My understanding is that they’ll be operating Network Rail PLPR infrastructure monitoring trains (replacing 37s), following on from the trials with 43045/050/060 last year.

That's interesting to know - would this include the regular 37 + DBSO working that comes past my garden in Epsom every couple of weeks?

To right.
However 43045 and 43060 are at long marston with two vehicles inside them know ex hst mk3 ones ie lner/emr hst ones.
Moved around three weeks ago.
Interesting bit off speculation.
However could well see them due to their location working from long marston to the Severn valley railway via kidderminster and Worcester.
All close together.
Maybe long marston is there temporary new home.
Also they do have some hst coaches x2.
Maybe some more might come their way.
Very interesting indeed.

Depends if 43s are cleared through Epsom (either branch) in the S.A. (or any part of the route that train takes). Waterloo - Raynes Park (and indeed onwards to Basingstoke) shouldn't be a problem, but I'm not sure about all the branches off the SWML.

Of course, clearing 43s could just be a matter of filling in paperwork...

A path exists tommorow from Neville Hill to Kidderminster with 43274 (still in EMR Purple with Branding), 43044(!) And two other /2s coupled together at Neville Hill with what is believed to be 37057 going to collect them.

presumably 43044 is going so that it can be collected by a lowloader from Kidderminster - Neville Hill is difficult / impossible for this.

Was sitting in Dundee yesterday when the NMT with two ex LNER power cars came through. Didn't catch the numbers but they've got black NR branding on them.
Looked strange with the red PC's and the yellow coaches. The flying banana with raspberry topping!

The two LNER ones on the NMT are covering for heavy overhaul work. Different to the Colas ones that have been re-wired to work with the standard 27wire through working on units like PLPR1, MENTOR etc.

Does that mean single 43s will be working trains?

Probably not, since there are no single other locos working NR test trains, also a minor mis-type on my part.
It's not "Standard 27 wire working", it should read, "To through work with the standard 27 through wiring"

I thought they had DBSOs and DVTs so they could have single loco trains?

The Ultrasonic Measuring Train (UMT) and sorry if I have the name wrong but not the PLPR one, it was coming up to Inverness with a single 37 and DBSO whereas the PLPR was top and tail. However since it's been running with Colas more recently both have been 37 top and tail.

Is the intention for the 43's to completely replace the 37's including going north and west of Inverness? I've been a bit sloppy trying to catch the 37's recently as I'm not so keen on the Colas livery but if they're days are numbered I should make the effort again.

The DVTs were rarely used and are now off-lease. The DBSOs are almost exclusively used with the low speed ultrasonic trains. The 43s will be for the PLPR trains which record at line speed; these trains currently use top-and-tail 37s, 67s or 73s. I’m unsure what the plan is for replacing 37s on ultrasonic trains.

For the PLPR trains which visit Inverness every four weeks, most likely yes.

37+DBSO will be an ultrasonic train, not sure what the plans are for them. The PLPR trains on the Southern which currently are mostly top and tail 73s will be remaining as they are.

The ex-LNER power cars alreadly have 27way wiring (LNER replaced the 36-way), so presumably just a case of adapter cables? to match the sockets? Or have the replaced the sockets on the power cars?

Presumably the through wiring on the NR sets was designed for blue star?

The trains have through-wiring for 27-way (Blue Star) and AAR.

Thanks. Does it use the same cabling or separate runs? Presumably by fitting the same sockets to the power cars, or using adapter cables, they can stick the HST multiple working through it too?

The HSTs for Colas are converted to through work with 27 wire jumpers.

AAR and Blue Star are very different but it's not too different to configure coaches for both types of operation. DVTs / DBSOs for both is more complex.

It’s a set of cables. As long as you have a) enough wires to cover all the control functions, b) a wiring schematic to map the power car system to the 27 way cable and c) an adapter plug/cable you shouldn’t need to change the stock or the power cars.

As I understand it those power cars already had 27-way connectors fitted by LNER (the only HST operator to do this - the rest retained the 36-way).

I understand that the LNER connectors are still 36-way, but a different design to the other two types.

You mean other than the lighting control wires, the control voltage for this, the fire system wiring for the NR generators and the Comms controls...?

Are those wired through the existing blue star and AAR jumpers then?
