Sorry don't have the miles for 'gone' routes, only current or very recently closed.

Just a gentle reminder to keep to topic - Carlisle Station Improvements.

If anyone wants to discuss venues away from the station they are welcome to do so in a separate thread in a more appropriate section of the forum.

thanks :)

Fingers crossed it will be back soon.

It always seemed busy when I was in there !
Yes, lets hope it does reopen, there are too many pubs that have closed down in recent years, it always makes me sad when I go past one.

However, I did get to spend 4 hours having drinks and a good lunch at the Station Inn by Ribblehead Viaduct a few days ago too.

Owing to the rail timetables, you are "Forced" to have to spend quite a while there. :)

Indeed. It's a good place to lose a few hours.

Are these miles from KGX to Doncaster and the S & C to Carlisle?
Yes, these are mileages via existing track. ECML then S&C. I don't have the mileage via Ingleton, but looking on the map S&C v Ingleton seem to be very similar. If Ingleton is shorter, it won't be by much.

St Pancras – Leicester – Toton – Barrow Hill – Leeds avoid – S&C is rather surprisingly 308m60ch. I didn’t realise that the MML was bendy enough to add around 10 miles.

Meanwhile back closer to the thread topic, the video suggests that quite a bit of splitting/joining is going to happen at Carlisle, I can see A/B platform names being implemented if this is the case.

Platform 1 is progressing with concrete having been poured over the repaired steel plates. The drainage has been extended to the limit of the current works. Tarmac is reported to be scheduled for tonight. Ive been told that the next phase is due to follow as far as platform 2 after which the contractor (Story) will be moving outside the station to start on the new entrance.tempImage0ZpeHI.png

It looks like the north end of platform 1 is now finished and is supposed to be opening on Saturday with works moving to the centre section of P1.28EC88C0-0689-4F11-8183-B089FC34AECA.jpeg

So it's a new platform edge and the bobble strip, before the main work gets under way?

Just so it can cost more, the platform surface is looking to be the same. When the extension comes how much of this new platform will be removed, so the new one can fit.

The platform is being levelled and height corrected, new concrete copings are being installed, tactile paviours installed, the entire platform surface is being resurfaced to remove the current undulations etc., the falls are being corrected i.e. into the new linear drain. The north third is complete and is supposed to be open today with the works being moved to the next section (as far as the buffers in platform 2). I’ve been told by one of the workforce that on completion of the second section of platform 1, work will transfer to another platform (possibly platform 3). Making an assumption regarding the remainder of platform 1, could it be waiting for HS2 to pay for the modifications to the layout of track and platforms realignment? Again I assume that the line into the current platform 1 will be realigned to serve platform 0 with the current track into platform 2 being the route into the realigned platform 1.

I’d be very surprised if the current work has any bearing on HS2 future proposals, the timescales are just way too long in the future. Discussing both issues in this one thread was probably premature...

Perhaps knowing that alterations will be required at the south end of the station for HS2 has prompted some joined-up thinking for once! I.e. do what can be done now to improve the station and leave the HS2 modifications for another day and another budget. Its not as if the current platform lengths are being fully occupied by the longest passenger trains (11-coach class 390s). However this is all for the speculation section of this forum so I’ll stick to reporting what I see and what I hear from ‘informed sources’!

Good Photo, what train service was that by the way? Proper carriages and loco hauled?

The north end of platform 1 is now in service with the cage just north of the mess room which was used to store salt and miscellaneous ’come in handy’ stuff having been removed. Work has moved on to the next section but extending further south than I was told.
Three more photos from this week (5 August) show progress along platform 1 and coping stones removed from the west face of platform 2. In one photo we can see what the platform surface used to be like before the bitumen was applied on top. The steel plates look to be in a better condition in this section so work should progress quicker.

According to the Railway Codes website, which has data for closed lines, the mileage from Settle Jn to Ingleton (end of Midland mileage at 246m 21ch) was 11 m 61 ch; from there to the L&C zero point at Low Gill was 18m 72ch, from Low Gill to Carlisle station 40m 79ch; so the total Settle Jn to Carlisle via Clapham, Ingleton and Low Gill was 71m 52ch, a bit shorter than the Midland's route, but of course the ruling gradient, over Shap, on the Lancaster and Carlisle was steeper than anything on the Settle and Carlisle, and the curvature was (and still is) more restrictive. The Low Gill viaduct, for example, was subject to a restriction (40 mph if I recollect) because of its curvature, which is still obvious from a passing WCML train. The summit at Shap is of course lower than that at Ais Gill. So it is correct that the shortest overall route was from Kings Cross via Holbeck and Ingleton.

I was at Carlisle yesterday and I did see some of the platform works for myself, sometimes it makes me wonder what is going on?
If the number 2 bay is going to be filled in why fit all new platform edging on one side (to start with)? Or do the planners know something that we don't?

I, too, was there yesterday and a couple of contractors were within the worksite barriers having recently repaired the platform 1 side face of the bay. They didn’t seem to know what the scope of the main work is and so we’re unaware whether platform 2 is being filled in or having its surface(s) rebuilt. Looking at the north end of the main works on platform 1, I could see that the steel plates which have been uncovered have been surveyed for thickness as can be seen in the first photo where patches of rust have been ground away and the adjacent numbers in marker pen being in millimetres.0440D99C-869D-48C2-8562-DE23BDF26E0B.jpegF5699433-4B02-4260-BD86-0A4219860426.jpeg

For anyone who’s interested, bar 301 has reopened this morning.
