Avanti advertising for qualified driver talent pools at both Euston and Wolverhampton. Closing date 12th August

Good luck to anyone who applies!

(Anyone happen to know if Preston/Manchester depots are ever going to need qualified drivers again?!)

I don’t think Manchester will be looking for qualified again in the short-term (though I could well be wrong). Manchester will be losing work due to Holyhead depot opening soon and there’s also been a lot of internal trainees coming through (as well as a few qualified) so that’s offsetting any gaps at the mo. I’m not too clued up on Preston depot so I’m not 100% sure. The real need is at Euston and Wolves at the mo.

No worries, cheers for the info!

Bit of a random question here guys, but does anyone know if Avanti offer their staff the chance to take a career break? I’m currently with SWR and it’s something we’re very fortunate to have, looking at taking a year off to go travelling in the future.

What's the max travel time from the depot for Euston? Doesn't seem to mention on the ad - 60/90 mins?

(not that I can even think about applying for something like this yet!)

Just wondering why you want to move, the financial benefits are fairy similar?

No Avanti do not allow career breaks sadly. That stopped just in the last few years of the Virgin franchise.

Ah shame, that’s my decision made then! Thank you.

Always been interested in driving the WCML, but based on what I’ve now been told regarding career breaks, I’ll probably wait a few more years before applying.

I'll second the request for any kind of taxi agreements for early/late shifts, as I don't live on the WCML so would be commuting in via Liverpool Street for Euston

Go travelling mate. I took a sabbatical for a year and went to South America and Asia. Best thing I’ve ever done. Just makes returning to the daily grind particularly difficult!

Shame about the drop in salary for a minimum of two years.
There aren't many tocs for whom 58k is a drop

The 51k is during the training, which link depending should only be a few months of minimal handling, and route learning, for a qualified driver.

It also states it goes up in increments over that 2years

Did you go alone ? Sounds like something to do only if you’ve no ties.

Yeah I was/still am single with no kids. Going solo is the best way. The couples I met along the way (romantic or just friends) were sick of each other after 3 months.

Pretty much every toc in London pays above 58k, some substantially I can only think of maybe South Eastern and GA that don't.

And with the way things are with covid and training I'd be thinking very very carefully of taking a 10's thousand of pound pay cut for training when things can change in an instant.

its a no brainer to me. It’s open access operators that would worry me.

Anyone got the current new starter roster for Euston depot? And what routes & traction do new starters sign when first passing out to be productive?

It opens next year. Initially 20 drivers. No idea when they will recruit externally though.
Funnily enough that's at least the third different figure I've heard on the grapevine about the size of the new depot. Everyone seems to be agreed on the lack of need for externals at this time though.

Any word on what work they'll have yet?

That one was in the company council minutes.
At first just some of Preston’s work, not sure exactly what.
