I've been shown this offer:

It’s a great time to appreciate the beauty of the changing seasons, so whether you want to go as far as the rugged coastlines of Cornwall or explore the dramatic Sussex countryside, we’ll get you there in your usual comfort completely free.
Why not make it a weekend to remember and bring your friends or family along? Then you can also take advantage of some of our great 2FOR1 offers to use when you get to your destination. Then your companion’s First Class ticket almost pays for itself.

So now..... what's the cheapest 1 month season on the FGW Network that would unlock this entitlement to free 1st Class weekend travel?

I've found Worcester Foregate Street to Worcester Shrub Hill for £41.50. Can anyone beat that?

£41.50 (plus a few quid for a photo for the Season) for unlimited First Class travel on FGW for the next few weekends. Might just do this.

Just beaten my own find.

Appleford - Culham 1 month First Class Season £33.50

where in the T and C's does it state that the season ticket must be at least one month validity ? i.e. could one get a 7 day season if one wanted say a "weekend bash" ?

so using the above appleford to culham example this comes down to £8.70

Am i correct in thinking this ?

It doesn't say that it has to be 1 month anywhere that I can see.

Start off with a £33.60 Bath Spa-Chippenham 7DF

I'm not sure there is a cheaper FGW 1st class season ticket...

£33.60 for 2 days unlimited 1st Class travel... not bad.

Sleepers aren't excluded by the looks of it (seated).

£8.70!

So 1 month is £33.50

If you bought a monthly starting on the 20th November, you'd get 5 weekends (10 days) of free 1st class weekend travel by my reckoning...

£3.35 per day :)

On the voucher it asks for origin and destination station and so do I need to print a new voucher for each trip I'm going to make?

That was my thought too. I assume the guard just clips it like a normal ticket.

But in the T&C is states

The First Class Weekend travel voucher is valid for multiple journeys between Saturday 23rd October and Sunday 28th November 2010, on all First Great Western
services on Saturdays and Sundays that have First Class accommodation

So does that translate as multiple journeys between say Paddington and Cardiff for the date specified only as filled in on the voucher ?

How many vouchers can one download and print off then ?

hmm southampton to PAD then sleeper to PNZ, spot of breakfast. BTM and back to SOU - possibly I think!

That £8.60 season + a couple of £3.60 CDS,s, looks intresting.

It's effectively a rover.

My advice would be to print multiple vouchers and complete one for each day, just to be safe.

Not sure it is. Sleeper doesn't run on Sat night/Sun morning. So whilst you may be able to get on the sleeper at PAD on Sun night and complete that journey through 'til Mon morning, you are not able to continue travelling back from PNZ to BRI (it's not BTM) then BRI to SOU as the pass is no longer valid.

It may be possible however to board the Friday night sleeper at Reading at 0037 Saturday morning.

Yeh thought of that after I posted, still thinking day train down SOU - WSB - PNZ (or somewhere) then sleeper back to PAD/ RDG and a normal railcard fare.

Edit: can't realy think too had as I am at Waterloo and not home.

2nd Edit: ahh Reading at 00:37 - intresting!

Doesn't the next day start at 02:30 as far as the railway is concerned?

I think it finishes at 0230 (or 0430 on Oyster in London), but write-ups of ALRs suggest that you can start using them just after midnight on the first day.

Quite possibily, but put RDG to PNZ into a journey planner with a start time of 0015 and the ticket offered is dated for that day and not the previous day.

e.g. RDG - PNZ Saturday 20th November first available service is listed as the 0037.

It starts at 00:00 and finishes at something like 02:00 (or is it 02:30) with some easements to allow later trains in some cases (e.g. 03xx LDS-YRK).

I advised someone they could buy an Off Peak ticket for the 01:40 York - Man Airport... yeah, they could have, IF they had bought the ticket at 23:59. D'oh! But as they bought it after 00:00 it counted as the next day (which was a weekday) so peak fares applied!

Anyway if I need to buy a peak ticket to Piccadilly I know another ticket to get that's the same as the Off Peak ticket (thanks to "simplification" and franchise changes causing things to be less simple);)

Two more questions about the FGW season ticket offer on their website, which says ...

If you’re a First Class season ticket holder, there are offers just for you.

By signing up to receive these, we’ll regularly update you on the latest deals and when you renew your season ticket we’ll send you 6 free tickets for your friends and family, or just keep them for yourself!

a) how long does the 1st class season ticket have to be valid for to trigger this ? ( i.e. 7 days, one month ) etc
b) what class and validity do the said "free tickets" have ?

p.s. It would be very useful if someone could double-check that the "rover" offer is really valid with a 7 day season, since the following link does mention, in passing , the minimum one month validity:-

http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/Content.aspx?id=5180

Does one take this "as is" i.e. if their marketing dept. has not contacted you within a month, then write to them and remind them so ?

Thats interesting as I've used the sleeper from Exeter to London before which is scheduled to leave around 1am with a super off peak for that day which based on your theory would be invalid and actually avantix seems to support your theory. I remember the restrictions used to have an exception permittting the sleeper but whilst the relaxtion for the fishguard night train is still in the Night Riveria relaxation has been removed. Can anyone confirm whether the sleeper is now banned with off-peak fares from Exeter heading into London without using the ticket from the day before?

I have just spoken to FGW and the lady I spoke to hadn’t heard of the offer and according to her it is only valid with season tickets of 1 month or longer and the railway day starts at 02:30, how this can be enforced is quite easy, by not selling a sleeper supplement to the passenger!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
There is also this offer: http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/Survey.aspx?id=5181

Go first class at weekends for £20 and take someone else with you also for £20 if you have a season ticket.

A devonport to Dockyard season is £8.50 for 1 month.

So £24.25 each per day.

It appears the First Class season ticket offer doesn't require a month or more validity (page id5184) on the season whereas the Standard Class ticket offer (id5181, £20 offer) does.
Unless I'm missing something?

So where on the FGW website does it explicitly state this ?
What document is the said lady looking at on order to make this statement ?
Especially as she has not heard of the offer in the first place !
Why is the said document NOT in the public domain ?
Or is she making the rules up as she goes along !

I suspect that she is correct, but I find it most disconcerting that
a) the terms are inconsistent between the various offers
b) they are not made clear to the public
c) FGW's employees appear to be able to "make up the rules on the fly"

I agree!!

I was informed though that the T&C's I was looking at were the T&C's for the voucher and not the offer! And that all details were sent out to qualifying season ticket holders!

Edit: I will clarify; "...according to her...." and rephrase as "....according to the person she spoke to clarify the topic while I was on hold...."
