Hi there

Looking for a ticket leaving Bolton Saturday morning and returning Monday, but the only return I can find is returning same day?
Thanks
Chris

There is no Off Peak Return other than Day Returns.

It actually appears cheapest to buy a Bolton-Blackpool North off-peak return and finish/start short at Preston, rather than two singles.

Ah great stuff, cheers

Where would we stand if we bought the above ticket, got off in Preston on Saturday, then decided to carry on to Blackpool Monday, returning same day?

Couldn't do it - the outward journey must be completed on the same day.

You would need to buy a seperate Preston-Blackpool single on the Monday, and then use the return Blackpool-Bolton portion on the way back.

You couldn't do that, as travel on the outward portion must be completed by 04.30 on the Sunday. Even if it was a journey you couldn't complete in one day you would have to complete it on the Sunday.

How many of you are travelling? If two of you buying a duo ticket on the Saturday £16.80 and another on Monday works out cheaper. Just discard the return portions.

Note that Duo tickets not valid on the Monday before 09.30 unless it's bank holiday you are travelling.

Will the Bolton - Blackpool North off-peak return be valid to end at Preston? If I have read BRFares.com correctly (at https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=BON&dest=BPN&rte=317&tkt=SVR), it says

VALIDITY
One journey in each direction to be made within:
Outward Validity:
AS ADVERTISED (1 day)
Break of journey is prohibited by this fare's restrictions
Return Validity:
AS ADVERTISED (1 month)

If this means what it seems to say, it suggests that you can't end early on the way out.

Many retailers will either not inform purchasers of this purported restriction, or will indeed state the opposite.

I doubt that there is any intention to impose a break of journey restriction; I think OP can be fairly certain they won't encounter issues.

As a fares advisor, I would never be able to publicly recommend you break a restriction that serves no useful purpose, isn’t advised at the time of sale, isn’t known about by the majority of staff and isn’t enforceable due to the lack of barriers at Preston. It would be a Bad Thing for me to recommend that you ignore the BoJ restriction.

PS: I’ll PM you with an alternative.

If your happy to travel via Wigan North Western and stick to specific times, some saving's could be had. Try trainsplit.com as you can get advance tickets on the Wigan-Preston section on some services.

To be fair Preston often has manual checks on the bridge from P1, but as you'd need to go that way to e.g. go to the booking office they are unlikely to stop you.

Back when I used to smoke, saying I was going for a cigarette outside before my next train always got me past the barriers with non-BoJ Advance tickets. It’s a daft concept really, especially considering using station facilities (some of which like ATMs, cycle racks etc are outside) isn’t a ‘break’!
