I know a number of members are booked on this one, so thought I would make a thread for it :)

Featuring ROG 37's Chesterfield-Workington and dropping off at Ravenglass. Although I'm still keeping an eye-out on RealTimeTrains for the exact route and timings, I believe the Dore West Curve and Stockport-Stalybridge lines should feature as unusual bits of track. I'm looking forward to a trip on the Ravenglass & Eskdale too for something a little different.

We are very pleased to announce our first tour since 2019. The Retro Cumbrian Coaster II will be running on Saturday 28th August 2021 from our usual pick up stations to the delightful Cumbrian coastal town of Whitehaven. The train will also be calling at Ravenglass (for the Ravenglass & Eskdale steam railway) as well as Workington.
We are keeping a very close eye on the current Covid situation. Under current government advice, we are able to offer the buffet bar and trolley service, both offering a range of drinks - including real ales - and snacks.

Of course, your safety is our top priority. We will be ensuring all surfaces are regularly cleaned and sanitised. Hand sanitiser will also be available throughout the train.

We are also now selling Ravenglass & Eskdale tickets at the discounted rate of £10 for a round trip, available to anyone who is also booked on the railtour.

Train Information

We have requested Rail Operations Group Class 37s to haul this tour.

Update (23 August 2021):

The train is now sold out in both first and standard accommodation. Please email [email protected] for last minute availability

Tickets are now being sent out and should be with passengers by Wednesday 25 August.

Quite a few bits of unusual track for this one looking at the paths which have now appeared in RTT - you can add Earles Sidings down goods loop and the Dalston Junction to Park South Junction Barrow avoider to the list it seems!

Ah that’s amazing. I wasn’t expecting the Barrow avoider as I thought the signal box wasn’t in use for it on a Saturday. However, I will be very happy if we do use it :)

The lion's share of those I was involved in avoided Barrow, which was the rarer route for charters, and typically the box often got opened as NR simply requested a signaller. There were a few exceptions though. One back in 2008 picked up between Manchester and Barrow (terminating Barrow at night) so that certainly missed the avoider. It did save a good bit of time when you went that way instead of Barrow.

The tour took the Barrow avoider this morning.

37510, 37800, 57312 all heading the tour now on the way back South.

Lack of brake van in the formation means its not as easy to run the 57 around the train as that is also performing that role, since a trailing loco can perform the duty if so required. Also would mean extra shunting needed. Half expected the 57 to be left where it was and it has been. Not such a daft idea in the circumstances.

Enjoy your very railtoury route (Even by Railtour standards your tour doesn't half wander)
Yes it’s been a very scenic trip, but there have been some good bits of track in there and it has been a good day.

Was your tour supposed to be steam hauled originally?

Yep. It failed at Carnforth an hour or two before we arrived with an AWS Fault

Oh dear! At least the tour ran though…

That's right. It's not pretty at the organising end when the steam gets ripped too early or doesn't appear at all (lots of demands for money and vicious letters with no support from the supply chain if it occurs on the day), although RTC are more than used to it on the volumes they've run.

No I can imagine it doesn’t go down well, my sympathies go to the staff that have to handle that.

We saw Leander in Black livery today at Carnforth on our way North on the retro tour, was that the loco that failed? Seeing a Jubilee in black was strange, or have they just being moving nameplates around again?

I think Leander has been in black since it's last overhaul, it was off to Bishop's Lydeard to work an RTC tour tomorrow. The loco that failed was 46115 according to reports elsewhere.

Leander was working south for a tour on Sunday. The loco that failed was Scots Guardsman.

On Saturday, we had a choice of railtours,
1. A fully steam hauled trip from Stockport and back to Carlisle (the RTC trip)
2, A diesel hauled trip from Chinley or Stockport to Workington and back (the Retro Railtours trip)
As we like steam haulage, we chose RTC

Bizarrely, those on the diesel tour got more mileage behind steam (had they chosen the Ratty option) than us gullible fools on the steam tour!
