I'm aiming to spend a few days in Manchester and although not direct, is the following route allowed with an off peak return. Hemel Hempstead to Crewe, then Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly using the northern service via Manchester Airport? I The reason I want to use this route, is I need to bash the line between Wilmslow and Manchester Airport.

I'll leave it to the forum experts to confirm, but the routeing you describe seems entirely reasonable.

It might be worth noting that advance fares are available on the Crewe - Manchester Airport - Manchester Piccadilly service which, combined with a LNR only ticket to Crewe, may work out cheaper than a through ticket in any case.

Yeah that’s fine. If you can commit to specific times, I’d suggest doing as @JonathanH mentions above and split advance tickets at Crewe - the minimum connection time there is ten minutes.

For me, I'd rather just buy a open return and travel on whatever service suits me and not be committed to certain trains.
