How many left and in working order, anyone know? I drove all 22 of them at one point or another. Great loco.
Six Deltics are still surviving - 55002/9/15/16/19/22. 55019 and 55022 are regularly used on the main line, 55016 is at LSL's Margate museum and 55002 is at the NRM. Not sure about the whereabouts of the others.
Aye, 55009 has been used on mainline tours in the last few years (made it to Edinburgh a few times), but is currently out of service with serious faults as @Trackman states.I think it’s 55009 which is used on the mainline? 55009, 55015 and 55019 are the three that are owned by the Deltic Preservation Society. 55015 has been completely overhauled over the last many years at their base at Barrow Hill and 55019 seemed to be on the diesel gala circuit the last few years.

Aye, on the Auld Reekie tour from Edinburgh on 3rd March 2019. 009 was declared a failure on the southbound run at Berwick-upon-Tweed due to major flashover damage. I can't comment on the source/cause of the flashover as I'm anything but a expert on such matters, though I'm sure others can/will.Ah yes. Was it 55009 that suffered the flashover from the OHLE on a tour then?
Jury is still out on that one.Aye, on the Auld Reekie tour from Edinburgh on 3rd March 2019. 009 was declared a failure on the southbound run at Berwick-upon-Tweed due to major flashover damage. I'm amazed six actually survived.Six Deltics are still surviving - 55002/9/15/16/19/22. 55019 and 55022 are regularly used on the main line, 55016 is at LSL's Margate museum and 55002 is at the NRM. Not sure about the whereabouts of the others.
One of the many railway experiences I wish I had been able to experience! The number of survivors does seem remarkably high compared to other classes!I'm amazed six actually survived.
I never chased Deltics, but have on several occasions visited death row at Doncaster to pay my respects.
Wow I did not quite make haulage behind them all even. As you say great loco.I drove all 22 of them at one point or another. Great loco.
Many of the Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh workings were 47s.With only 22 locos in the fleet, how did they cover all the ECML diagrams? I guess there were only 3 departures per hour from Kings X in those days? Were most of the trips to W Yorks, Hull, York stoppers etc covered by Cl 47s?
It was, even as late as 1970 you had as I said only 5 regular London-Edinburgh services.but the service may have been even thinner when they were introduced.
I see, cheers for that. Like I said, I'm anything but a expert lolJury is still out on that one.
So far the evidence is it literally went 'bang', main genny and six traction motors plus its cables burnt out, plus it had large burn marks on the roof.
The severity of the damage was akin to a lightning strike, but that seems to have been ruled out and then thought something to do with the OHLE.
Was it 55009 that suffered the flashover from the OHLE on a tour then?
Aye was on that tour. Had the pleasure of Tornado in fine fettle on the way to Edinburgh and then the Deltic just got going on song and then bang. As I said at the time, that's the problem with this heritage traction it's too unreliable. Unlike a modern locomotive like Tornado
