Made a number of journeys to Manchester this weekend. I noticed that there are a number of yellow speed cameras (Hadecs 3) but also potentially cameras installed on the overhead gantries as there were the speed camera interval lines painted in the road. How do the latter of these work? Are they average speed checks? Where are the cameras for these located?

Two camera systems are in place.

One for exceeding the average speed between the gantries, used when the speed limit is reduced and indicated on overhead gantries. Cameras are on the back of the gantries.

One for exceeding the 70 limit when no lower limit is in force. Cameras are located on the left gantry upright.

M1 has similar. On the stretch I regularly use the 70 limit cameras are near Wakefield and Sheffield.

Normally the yellow Hadecs on the gantries are preceeded with a set of cameras that capture the speed on the variable signs so are used for that. Never ever seen one go off when being passed by cars at over 80 or more when the signs are off. I dont believe any variable speed limit section does average speed measurement?

I have seen the Hadecs go off a few times when the signs are off. Cars travelling at high speeds.

They are however only activated for 'operational' reasons so some will get away with passing the camera at over 80, others won't.

I've definitely seen them go off during normal running - I wonder if different police forces have different policies?

They definitely work when the signs are off. Someone went past me doing at least a ton on the M6, evidently he didn’t see the big yellow box, but doubt he missed the flashes...

I know someone who was done for doing 65 when the limit was showing at 60, so don't assume that less than10% over the limit means you are safe from being flashed!
