Morning all.
I have a trip coming up soon which requires transferring from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Victoria. I've seen there's a bus, possibly the metro or I could also walk. My train arrives into Piccadilly at 09.12 and leaves from Victoria at 09.58. I don't know Manchester at all, could someone please advise how they would get between the two stations. Thanks in advance

It depends on your priorities, the bus is free but can get stuck in traffic and doesn't take a direct route, Metrolink probably isn't included in your ticket but takes contactless payment and is quick enough, or you have enough time to walk depending on your inclination and perhaps the weather.
A simple walking route is along London Road, past Piccadilly Gardens (not shown well on the attached map) and to Market Street (pedestrianised) to Cross Street where you turn right. I take Dale Street, fewer people and slightly more direct. I usually walk because I don't have to wait for a bus or for a tram and feel more in control. I only ever use the bus when time isn't important and I don't care if I miss a train.

Alternatively, you might be able to get the 09:18 Southport train from P13, arrive at Salford Crescent at 09:26 then get the 09:33 to Victoria arriving 09:41

Absolutely, but I wouldn't personally because I'd have lost control again - the Southport trains are unreliable because their rolling stock isn't reliable enough currently, and I wouldn't trust any times via either Salford Crescent or the Ordsall Curve. But you're not wrong and it depends on the OP's priorities I guess, I can only say what I'd do or not do.

My priority is being on the 09.58 at Victoria!! It's a cheeky day out taking advantage of the Northern £1 tickets! I'm thinking walking using the map I was given above is probably the best option

Please report back on your experience, it'd be good to know how you find this - for example, I've been doing the walk since 1973 and it'd be good to hear how you find it as someone unfamiliar with the area and route.

A Metrolink single from Piccadilly to Victoria is £1.40.

Journey time should be 12 minutes.

Frequency/likely waiting time = ???

Isn't it every 12 minutes at the moment?
Appears that's the case. So, if you've just missed a direct Victoria tram at Piccadilly, it might take you up to 23 minutes to complete the cross City Centre transfer (11 minutes waiting time + 12 minutes journey time). Not sure it would be all that much quicker walking, or interchanging onto another tram at either Piccadilly Gardens->Market Street or St. Peter's Square.

I did the tram from Picc to Vic and back again last weekend. Direct trams are every 12 mins, and (I think) they start from Picc; so probably keep to the 12 min gap. Contactless, just remember to tap out (think I might have forgotten on way back, will see what happens). The tram stop at Picc is downstairs (escalators on main concourse, over to the left slightly) didn't find it to be obviously signed. Vic is easy, tram platforms are part of main station.

Good job, your first route is precisely the one I take myself.
I tend to us the one that goes past Weatherspoon's and then along High street. But I don't think there's much in it for any of them.

If anyone ever asks me, I tell them the (slightly) longer route of follow the road down and it will eventually become pedestrianised, then when you get to Marks and Sparks turn right. It’s about two minutes longer than weaving through the quieter streets, but for anyone unfamiliar, it’s very much a sense of following your nose.

The recommended embalming route on the Google Maps link takes you virtually past the best coffee shop in Manchester if that’s your thing and you have time. North Tea Power on Tib Street

Embalming route? I take it that’s the way undertakers go?

 Blame any combination of fat fingers, autocorrect, and the ride quality of a 195. That should have said walking. God knows how it could be so wrong!

They could do with some big signs as you leave Victoria pointing the way to Piccadilly. It isn't intuitive which way to go.

I like what they have done in Bradford. I putting "buttons" in the pavements about ten to twenty yards apart showing the way.

You could just follow the tram lines.

With the tram being every 12 minutes and taking 12 minutes, if you've just missed one you are likely to be better off walking.

Google Maps says the route described by @jfollows takes 20 minutes but I've managed to do it train to train in 15 minutes before... granted, that was with some quite 'vigorous' walking!

There is a slightly shorter route available via Dale Street and Hilton Street but I suspect you're likely to end up wasting more time looking where you're going - and dodging cars at the many traffic lights - than going via @jfollows' route, which is pedestrianised once you cross Newton/Portland Street (just before Piccadilly Gardens).

Coincidentally I had to transfer from Piccadilly to Victoria earlier today and whilst I usually walk, I used the free bus. Worked quite well but I agree about the traffic issues. I'd certainly say it's no quicker than walking but was good for something different.
