TfW have been busy prosecuting fare evaders

It's interesting to note that the first one, who didn't attend court, ended up paying twice as much as her neighbour who committed the same crime but plead guilty.

The fare from Rhymney to Barry Docks is the same as that to Barry Island so if that was the journey they were making their attempt to save money by short faring was a spectacular fail!
HERE are five train ticket dodgers from Gwent who will have to pay huge fines for failing to pay their rail fares after their cases were heard at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court.

The first defendant will have to hand over a penalty nearly 238 times what her ticket would have cost her.

JASMINE DEAN, 25, of Maerdy View, Rhymney, Caerphilly, was ordered to pay £665.80 in a fine, costs, compensation and a surcharge for not paying her £2.80 fare between Barry Docks and Barry Island on a Transport for Wales service on June 4.

The case was proved in her absence.

CHLOE BERRY, 20, of Maerdy View, Rhymney, Caerphilly, was ordered to pay £295.80 in a fine, costs, compensation and a surcharge for not paying her £2.80 fare between Barry Docks and Barry Island on a Transport for Wales service on June 4.
She pleaded guilty.
DYLAN PREECE, 18, of Glan Ffrwd, Caerphilly, was ordered to pay £297.90 in a fine, costs, compensation and a surcharge for not paying his £4.90 fare between Caerphilly and Barry Island on a Transport for Wales service on June 1.

He pleaded guilty.

LEAH RICHARDS, 24, of Moor Street Newport, was ordered to pay £119.50 in a fine, costs, compensation and a surcharge for not paying her £5.50 fare between Newport and Cardiff Central on a Transport for Wales service on May 1.
She pleaded guilty.
SCOTT WALL, 33, of Moor Street, Newport, was ordered to pay £298.50 in a fine, costs, compensation and a surcharge for not paying his £5.50 fare between Newport and Cardiff Central on a Transport for Wales service on May 1.
He pleaded guilty.

To be expected.
Ms Berry stuck her head in the sand and ignored the Court correspondence so her earnings were presumed, where as Ms Berry responded to the Court with all the required details.

The default fine is based on £440 income after tax. Depending on circumstances this is roughly equal to £28,000/year gross. If you earn more than this (and you are guilty) there could be an advantage to not engaging with the court.

Where there is some information that tends to suggest a significantly lower or higher income than the recommended £440 default sum, the court should make a determination based on that information.
If you later supply evidence of means you can ask to get a fine reduced.
