Yeah, I noticed that. In terms of nearby major landmarks, 'Botanic Gardens' would be a nice name for a station, and of course brings to mind Hull's old station.
Didn't there once used to be one in the Glasgow area?

If there are no plans to use Stratford International for any international train services, like as an interchange for a HS1-HS2 link (which has probably been scrapped idk) to put the Regional Eurostar plans back in the game, then they might as well rename it 'Stratford High Speed' as it's never ONCE been served by Eurostar trains. Stratford (normal) should be called 'Stratford Interchange'
"Stratford Olympic Park" or even "Stratford Olympic Village" has a nice ring to it, seeing that International was used for the shuttle service during the games and is the nearest station to the former Olympic park and village.

With Crossrail about to open, there's something slightly awkward to me about the new Elizabeth Line station being called just "Woolwich" as if it was the first or only station to serve Woolwich. Without the change of name to Elizabeth Line, I wonder if it might have been called "Woolwich Crossrail" in the same way we have a "West Hampstead Thameslink" to differentiate which line its on.

Yes....it was a semi-underground station on the Maryhill-Stobcross section of the former Caledonian Railway Central Low-Level system. After closure to passengers in 1939, the very ornate station building became a shop and cafe - and latterly a nightclub - but was destroyed by fire in 1970.

If Stonehouse gets its station on the Bristol-Birmingham line again it will need to differentiate between itself and the GWR one.

Stonehouse Midland and Stonehouse Great Western perhaps?

These sorts of names are more useful to people who live in and around the town.

However, a name that indicates the location of the station is always more useful to those coming from outside the town in my opinion.

I'd argue that the latter should be catered for, given the locals who use the train would likely have a fair idea of which trains depart from which station.

I believe it's going to be called Stroudwater (or that's proposed by the council) after the business park being constructed next to it. (Confusingly, it is the other side of Stonehouse from Stroud).

I didn't know that!

The Stonehouse station has been talked about for several years now. Here's what appears to be the latest on it from the town council...

I am for the opposite - removing the suffix when one is clearly the main station, and also unnecessary suffix, which include:
  • Southampton Central → Southampton
  • Southampton Airport Parkway → Southampton Airport
  • Bristol Temple Meads → Bristol
  • Cardiff Central → Cardiff
  • Dover Priory → Dover
  • Folkestone Central → Folkestone
And also removing the word International as it's misleading
  • Ashford International → Ashford
  • Ebbsfleet International → Ebbsfleet
  • Stratford International → Stratford High Speed
The only situation a suffix is needed at a main station is when there are multiple main stations, such as London or Birmingham.

Or Cardiff... both Central and Queen Street are fairly "central", so both need a suffix in my opinion. It does seem to me that many of your suggestions seem to advocate changes for the sake of changes, rather than to solve any identified problems.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
Although these are two separate locations of the same name, I was thinking that Hatton in the West Midlands Region could have the suffix "(Warks)" or "(West Mids)" added in the ticketing systems should if the ex Formartine & Buchan Railway is reopened to Fraserburgh and Peterhead, as there is a Hatton on the ex Boddam Branch, which could have "(Buchan)" as the suffix in the ticketing systems.

Being as the West Mids Hatton belongs to the post town of Warwick, the ex GWR station in Warwick could have "General" or "Town" added being as Parkway is not far away.

Cardiff Queen Street is not on the main line. Therefore I think that it should be treated like Farnborough, where the official name of the main station is just "Cardiff", but with the suffix (main) added in journey planners and ticketing systems.

Liverpool St ( High Level) and Liverpool St ( Low Level) or (Crossrail) when Crossrail finally gets going?
And perhaps Paddington ( General) and Paddington ( Crossrail ) to match?
Just in journey planners and timetables rather than on the platforms. There's probably an improving access argument for it!

University station in the West Midlands has worked well since 1978.

After all, Birmingham University/University of Birmingham is actually a proper university, unlike the present day Birmingham City University near Curzon Street which was the former polytechnic and based at Perry Barr until recently.
Could always rename it QE Hospital Birmingham or Harborne East

Ebbsfleet and Ashford do have International services though

The opposite was true with St Pancras, IIRC the low level Thameslink station started out with a separate code before it opened, but after it opened all the public facing information systems merged everything except Eurostar together.

The separate codes for St Pancras Low Level is still there in the background, but for all public fares/timetables/reservations purposes (other than Eurostar) the codes for the main station are used.

Yes, I think I remember that being mentioned at the time...
