Northern staff were informed via a retail brief yesterday of the immediate closure of Teesside Airport station "until further notice".

Realtime Trains confirms this and shows 2K02 (formerly the 1456 departure) as a passing service.

Why have they made the decision to suddenly close it? It only had one train a week in one direction only so i am surprised they are allowed to just suddenly close it without notice as i thought the parliamentary service was legally required? Also why have there been no announcements made by Northern Rail on their website or anywhere else as i would have expected something to be published by them?

I wonder if it's down to the remaining platform becoming unsafe.
Maybe but i visited not that long ago and the platform seemed safe enough. I thought that it was just the footbridge that was unsafe which is why they stopped trains from calling at the opposite platform. Hopefully there will be something about this published by Northern Rail soon.

It’s not, at present, a permanent closure so may not need to go through a legal process. And if it does Northern will no doubt be held to account by the DfT. Now, who owns the Northern franchise? Ah…

Reality is the station serves no purpose and is probably better off closed.

However, there is a station closure process and this is the third time it appears not to have been followed (Redcar British Steel and IBM being the other two stations that are technically open but have no trains calling). By all means close the station but the correct process should be followed.

You can add Brigg, Kirton Lindsey and Gainsborough Central to that list judging by the update from Grant Schapps in the Brigg line thread.

I agree, it's unacceptable - and it sets a dangerous precedent for operators of operationally inconvenient stations.

Earlier in the week, and possibly earlier, there was a notice on Northern's Journey Check about the closure of Teesside Airport station. Unfortunately, it now seems to have disappeared.

Also Stanlow.

But yes, process is there and should be followed.
I think Stanlow has a bus replacement, if so it’s still possible to catch a service from the station, albeit a bus.

I guess a non-permanent closure at least gives an opportunity to reopen the station in the future if circumstances change, such as new housing developments.

A big problem is the station site is neither convenient for the current passenger air terminal, nor for any likely housing or other development surrounding the airport. A new location near the A67 roundabout would be much better I think.

It’s a shame in my opinion. It’s not like the airport itself is getting smaller, on the contrary it’s expanding. So it’s a real shame that they are closing the station

They should just run a shuttle bus from the station in the area that matters: Darlington.

Is yet another regional airport actually needed?

Teesside Airport really ought to be another new town, like Thornaby. A town of 20,000 plus an industrial park would deliver far more to the area than a necrotic regional airport. Teesside is easily within the catchment of Newcastle, Manchester and Leeds Bradford, which are all much more useful airports.

It doesn't get that many flights in and out. So when you work out how many people would need to use the station to justify the expenditure on the repairs to the infrastructure, it then becomes a question of can the money be spent on something else more worthwhile.

How busy was Southend Airport when they opened a railway station there?

It had 42k passengers in 2011

Teesside appeared to be 3x the size pre-covid

In my opinion, the airport, the station, repairs and possible relocation are for the local political hierarchy to lead on funding for. A station might not be the best value for current numbers but future forecasted numbers may be more supportive

How about a 'refocus'- eg Teesside Freeport, or Teesside Village (like Bicester?).
Levelling up? May be needed for current Chancellor of Exchequer and Taxcollectors for the North:

Given the current state of affairs with regards to Covid and an aim to reduce flights where possible for environmental reasons, some of the smallest, regional, short-haul airports - which were already struggling - are going to have very limited futures I feel. London Southend is a bit different as a fringe low-cost London airport & overspills from the major ones.

In this regard the station is both poorly located for a site AND not many people want to go to that location anyway.

Have always thought Dyce station is quite poorly located for Aberdeen Airport, but of course, it does have a 6,000+ population settlement nearby.

Nothing much at Teesside Airport. Can't see why it shouldn't be closed. Can always be reopened in the future, albeit maybe at a different location, should the need ever arise.

Where would you relocate the station to? At what cost? And for Teesside Airport? It’s an aviation backwater.
