How would I know if I am infected with influenza?

You want me to carry out daily testing for all known viruses?

What do you think the environmental impact of this would be if everyone does that?

Do you want everyone in the world to do this, or just people in certain countries?
How would you know? You feel unwell and have symptoms. I dare say at least once in your life you've stayed off work because of the flu.

Without descending into a rabbit hole of questions that don't leas anywhere other tying discussions in knots. it's good sense to not spread virus's around if you think you've got one. If you can test and make sure, all the better.

I mean, if i was coughing all over the place, or had a sore throat and felt exhausted i'd probably work from home, or take a day off if i thought if i thought i was sick and transmissable, whatever it was. We've all got vulnerable grandparents or elderly relatives, our friends may be on treatments for other things that weaken immune systems.

Some people have weakened immune systems and don't even know.

So, if you think you've got something transmissable, it's usually a good idea to stay off and find out if you can.

I don't feel unwell. I am constantly exposed to viruses all the time; this time as I said I have a very slight sore throat but it would be ludicrous not to work for that reason.

Test for what? one specific virus or all commonly circulating viruses that can potentially cause people to be ill, including the likes of OC43? Why on earth would any sensible person do that?

We are literally designed to be constantly exposed to viruses; our immune systems are constantly defending us.

I mean, if i was coughing all over the place, or had a sore throat and felt exhausted i'd probably work from home, or take a day off if i thought if i thought i was sick and transmissable, whatever it was.
Yep if I felt that way I would. I don't have a cough and don't feel tired.
We've all got vulnerable grandparents or elderly relatives, our friends may be on treatments for other things that weaken immune systems.
And...? What do you propose?
Some people have weakened immune systems and don't even know.
If their immune system was weak they would soon know about it.
So, if you think you've got something transmissable, it's usually a good idea to stay off and find out if you can.
I am constantly being exposed to viruses; by that logic I'd need to stay off work indefinitely?

Also how do you know if it's transmissible or not? There's no actual test that can determine if someone is transmitting Sars-CoV-2, or any other virus. If you think there is, I'm all ears...

Do you propose that everyone tests every day for all common viruses? How much do you think this would cost? What would it achieve?
Don't you remember the virtue signallers' mantra from 2020: "if it saves one life, lockdown, masks and mass testing must continue"

It was blatantly obvious to me at the time that the financial costs of such measures would be ruinous to the country as a whole,
and the poor/elderly in particular, but these people couldn't see beyond their "stop Covid transmission at any cost" obsession. :(

My mother has a comprimised immune system, she has taken her jabs and she used to be a nurse.

I am free to visit her home anytime I like without tests or predujice.

I suggest people stop talking and fearmingering on her behalf, neither myself as her son or her appreciate random busy bodies trying their hand at pub medics

Get out of other peoples lives

It would be interesting to know if any of the opinions here favouring frequent testing, cautions behaviour, etc actually predate 2020 or not.

Yep. I guarantee that more people are going to die prematurely from the financial crisis (and other associated issues) caused by the over the top COVID response than were saved by the measures implemented.

I very rarely (if ever) like to speak on other peoples behalf, on this occasion however I will.

No they don’t.

It was obvious to me as well but anyone who tried to point this out got vilified for it.

I agree, I thought this would be the case from day 1.

Influenza is pretty debilitating. You really struggle to even get out of bed. We're talking at least 3-4 days of feeling awful.

There is no comparison with a common cold or dare I say it 'man flu'.

Taking precautions, to an extent, yes - if I felt under the weather with a symptomatic cold or similar, I would stay away from my grandparents, long before Covid

Common sense notwithstanding of course. Stuff like catching a sneeze has always been sensible.

How many people will die this winter because they cannot afford to heat their homes?

Exactly...

This winter it will be "Hug your elderly neighbour to save the NHS and save lives! Don't keep your distance!"

The irony of "getting out of people's lives" by putting yourself into others......

Now if i had symptoms of a cold would i be welcome to go and see your mother?

The reality is that Sars-CoV-2 is becoming the 5th endemic HCoV; it's going the same way as similar viruses such as OC43 and there is nothing anyone can do to stop this occurring, nor to avoid exposure to it.

If anyone has a weakened immune system, they could be susceptable to any virus and they can take whatever precautions they deem appropriate. The idea that everyone else needs to do something makes no sense.

Going back to your previous comment regarding testing, are you able to clarify who should be testing, how often, and what for, where you draw the line?

The irony of "getting out of people's lives" by putting yourself into others......
Can you clarify what you mean by this?
Now if i had symptoms of a cold would i be welcome to go and see your mother?
Some people I know seem to constantly have some sort of sniffle; are you suggesting they should never see any elderly relatives, ever?

If an elderly or vulnerable person is being visited they have the choice to take additional precautions if they wish to do so; no-one is stopping them. The fact so many of them choose not to speaks volumes.

You wouldn’t be welcome anywhere and its nothing to do with a cold.

However someone else yes they would be fine. They did before 2020 and they can now.

I see the Covid echo chamber is off again. The anti-any-precautions-whatever-against-coronavirus-how-dare-you-tell-me-what-to-do brigade enjoyed ranting so much that they have started a new thread to rant a bit more, even though most people have (happily) been able to move on.

Do you have anything constructive to say? What is the point of this post?

Of course most people have moved on and don't care about Covid; the problem is that some people/organisations/countries are still trying to ramp up the fear.

I created this thread not to "rant" but to inform people that articles were starting to appear about rising infection levels and to pre-empt these by assuring people that such headlines are nothing to worry about.

If no scaremongering and sensationalism was going on, this thread wouldn't need to exist.

There is more to life than Covid, over the last 2 years it has seemed as though to some only Covid has mattered.

Ah well the monkeypox didn't really impact much, and this 'wave' of Covid doesn't seem to be bothering most people.

Obviously now it's a good time for polio to make a comeback...

All of a sudden media are more hyped over viruses than anything else in the world, sorry stand corrected if it’s not one thing it’s another then we go back, are the media from that programme the magic roundabout by chance?

I see the year was 1984 (who would thought that?)

Yes, who would have thought that locking down the population of the UK for an extended period of time would allow dormant viruses to thrive once restrictions were lifted?

And it is a PARALYSIS INDUCING VIRUS according to the COVID Bedwetter Daily Mail

Not forgetting SUPER GONORRHEA!!! which poses a MAJOR GLOBAL THREAT

Super gonorrhoea warning: Austrian man catches drug-resistant strain of STI from Cambodian prostitute as experts claim virus poses 'major global threat'

  • Unnamed man in his 50s caught the STI by not using a condom in Cambodia
  • Tests revealed he had super gonorrhoea, which is resistant to regular drugs
  • Experts warned the spread of the super strain could makes cases untreatable
  • Comes as MPs were today warned more needs to be done to tackle superbug
Super gonorrhoea poses a 'major global threat', scientists have warned in the wake of an Austrian man catching a drug-resistant version of the STI.

The unidentified man, in his 50s, became infected after having unprotected sex with a prostitute while on holiday in Cambodia in April.

Five days later, when he returned home, he experienced a burning pain while urinating and discharge from his penis.

Medical tests reveled he had gonorrhoea and he was given standard antibiotics.

While the drugs made his symptoms disappear, the man still tested positive — which meant the treatment had technically failed. FAIR?

Doctors called his strain 'extensively drug resistant' and different to ones seen before.

They warned it could effectively render gonorrhoea untreatable, if it was allowed to spread.

Lead author of the report, Dr Sonja Pleininger of the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety, said such strains 'poses a major global public health threat'.

'If such strains manage to establish a sustained transmission, many gonorrhoea cases might become untreatable,' she said.

New medications targeting the gonorrhoea bacteria and/or the creation of an effective gonorrhoea vaccine are crucial to limiting the impact of drug resistant strains, the authors added.

The man was eventually treated with a week-long course of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, a combination antibiotic treatment. He later tested negative.

However, Cambodian sex worker was unable to be traced, meaning the situation could repeat itself, according to experts who detailed the man's case in the journal Eurosurveillance.

Gonorrhoea is the second most common STI in Britain, with almost 60,000 people catching it each year. Rough 680,000 Americans get infected each year, too.

Symptoms include a thick green or yellow discharge from the vagina or penis, and pain when urinating.

If left untreated, the disease can lead to serious complications including infertility and potentially life-threatening pelvic inflammatory disease in women.

In pregnant women, it can also cause permanent blindness for newborns.

Most strains are still treatable although super-strains have popped up over the past few years.

Cases of a type of gonorrhoea resistant to ceftriaxone have been rising in the Asia-Pacific region.

In February, British health authorities warned they had detected four genetically similar cases in the previous few months.

Gonorrhoea has been gathering resistance to a number of antibiotics over the past few decades, a phenomena called antimicrobial resistance.

British doctors used to prescribe the antibiotic ciprofloxacin. But in 2005 it was no longer recommended as a treatment because the bacteria had become resistant.

Another antibiotic — cefixime — was also dropped in 2011 for the same reason.

The strain the Austrian man had displayed resistance to azithromycin, one of the two frontline antibiotics used to treat gonorrhoea in Europe.

 Oh dear!

We do seem to be at the stage of 'throw everything we can find at the wall, in the hope something sticks half as well as that thing we got a lot of panic over a couple of years back'. Have the media not heard of the law of diminishing returns?

As somebody has commented there 'Monkpoliogonorrcovidpox. Good times.' 8-)

Precisely.

Having made international travel illegal for most of the past two years, it is not surprising that when people start travelling again and, "ahem", frequenting the red light district of various cities across the world, that there should be an increase in sexually transmitted diseases.

Just checked her twitter account, and she is already claiming it is airborne. Already demanding travel bans and saying that we should lockdown just in case.
